    Aspire One Won't Connect

    Hi,
I recieved my Acer Aspire One in the post this morning. And I immediately proceeded to unpack it from the box and get going. It booted up fine, and I spent the next hour or so casually surfing the interwebs. Then, after the first hour, my connection dropped (wireless) and since then I have been unable to connect to the internet, unless I use an ethernet cable. I've done Live Update more times than I can count, and have left it for 10 minutes to connect but to no avail. The odd thing is it still detects the access point, and tells me I have full signal. And by the way I'm using the Linpus Linux that came pre-installed.

    Cheers

    Re: Aspire One Won't Connect

Try another distro - unbuntu do a netbook orientated one now which has much better features anyway. I had no end of problems with the wireless card under XP *with a certain driver*

    http://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/unr

The wireless card in the acer isn't the greatest - I actually swapped mine for an intel one off ebay in the end.

    Re: Aspire One Won't Connect

You haven't hit the keyboard shortcut to turn the wireless off have you as I know my samsung nc10 before the latest bios update would allow you to turn the wireless off but it would still detect wireless networks.

As Dangle said though the acer wifi card isn't to grand and most people swap to the intel offerings. I have never looked into the Samsung to see if it can be swapped out itself as I think the samsung is using the Atheros wifi cards which ubuntu had a field day with till I grabbed some community drivers.

    Re: Aspire One Won't Connect

It shouldn't do, the majority of people tend to hack and slash these things to bits but that could be due to the price so many will do what they want to them and if they die just buy another one. If you do come across issue's just stick the rebuild discs in and restore it back to factory standards

Only thing I have noticed with ubuntu is that it spins up the HD a lot more in this samsung nc 10 not sure on those with SSD's in them. I replaced the 160gb HD in this with a 320gb hd I had going spare.

    Writing the Image

    Easy (graphical) Way

Click on the download link below to get the usb-imagewriter package. Firefox will offer you to either download the file or, as default action, to open it with the gdebi package installer. Keep the default action here and click ok.

    Download usb-imagewriter here

After gdebi finished you will find a new starter in your menu at Applications -> Accessories -> Image Writer
Its downloaded, but I can't open it. I think you need Ubuntu to run it?

    Re: Aspire One Won't Connect

I will have a look over this and get back to you as I bought an external dvdrw drive for this samsung nc 10 so i didn't have to bother with the likes of usb installers etc. Dangel for DirectHex will probably know a lot more about this though.

Just thinking though it maybe easier to download something like daemon tools and create a virtual machine that you can run the ubuntu live cd in and create it from there. Last time I used ubuntu on the netbook I didn't bother with the netbook remix i just used the full on 8.10 and it worked like a dream apart from a bit of driver tweaking for the wifi.

From memory if you run the live cd in a virtual machine and then tell it to install it gives you the install to usb option as standard

Also this link will probably explain the whole usb install a little better than the netbook remix page. Same principles apply:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...n/FromUSBStick

The link above also has a set of instructions for a Windows App that takes the iso image and then guides you through the usb install process

    Re: Aspire One Won't Connect

Look at the bit in the instructions titled:

"From Windows Command Prompt using flashnul
From Windows Command Prompt using flashnul

    1. Download the image to your disk.
    2. Download flashnul from http://shounen.ru/soft/flashnul/
    3. At the command prompt run:

    flashnul -p

    4. Note the physical device number for the target USB disk.
    5. At the command prompt run:

    flashnul <number obtained in prior step> -L \path\to\unr-<version>.img

    6. Answer "yes" after verifying the destination device.

Booting from such a USB key will let you install Ubuntu Netbook Remix on your device. "

use the util: http://shounen.ru/soft/flashnul/flashnul-1rc1.zip to do it. Looks fairly easy that way.

    Re: Aspire One Won't Connect

    Slightly n00bish question
I enter "flashnul -p", but I can't use "enter" to, for lack of a better word, enter it because it closes the command prompt
So what can I use to enter the "flashnul -p"

Are you trying to do it from the run box off the start menu?

If so type "cmd" in that box instead to open a fresh cmd window (that won't close)
Type "help" for a list of commands but you'll probably want to use "cd" to change directory to where you extracted that command line tool.

    Re: Aspire One Won't Connect

So on the command prompt I'd be entering what?

Sorry but I'm completely new to this

Edit: Couldn't you just reformat the memory stick to FAT32?
