worthy upgrade?

i have a p35 motherboard is it worth upgrading to a x48 motherboard? will i notice much difference?

the motherboard im thinking to get is the DFI LANParty LT X48-T2R

my pc is:
gigabyte ga p35 ds4
4gb ocz Reaper 1066
his hd4870
asus xonar dx
ageia physx card
640gb + 150gb
600watt ocz

I don't really see why you'd want to in all honesty, the Gigabyte P35s are good boards - in my opinion the only benefit with the X48 would be getting worthwhile crossfire performance, but you could equally sell the 4870 and replace it with a 4870 X2, and probably save money.

Did you just want to generally improve performance, or was crossfire the goal?

A lot of money to spend for a board with no immediate gain. It might overclock slightly better, but that's about it unless you want to use Crossfire, and in any case, as snooty says, an X2 would do the job with the P35.

I upgraded from a P965 board to a X38 board and I didn't gain 1Mhz in overclocking.
P35 and P965 chipsets are already very good and the benefit of going higher is minimal.

There will no no/minimal advantage just to upgrade the motherboard from one to another is nothing else is being upgraded, especially from a P35 to X48, as the P35 is a very capable chipset.

I went from a 975 to an X38 and the gain was massive.

I have both 975X and P35 based motherboards. The P35 is a better chipset but the 975X is still good enough for most things. Putting the money towards a full system overhaul makes more sense if you need one.

I believe someone's quoting novatech as doing a 4870 for &#163;115 now. Add that to the DFI X48 board for a total outlay ~ &#163;250. Most 4870 X2s are well over &#163;300 still, which means you'd have to get a very good 2nd hand price for your 4870 to break even.

That said, XFX appear desperate to prove me wrong...

the main reason i wanted a new motherboard was because my network chip had started to die but i decided to buy a nic instead and im happy i did

Exactly, it's unbelievably tempting! Fingers crossed though, I'll have an X48 before the week's out and I'll have a bit more choice
