The most superest, uberest, 13373St PC I ever built
This will all be mine, all mine, ALL FOR ME, very soon:
Intel I7 920 D0
Asus Triton 88 HSF
Gigabyte GA-X58 UD5 Mobo
Gigabyte HD 1 GB 4870 x 2
12 GB Patriot Viper 1600 Mhz ram
Antec P182 case with 5x low noise blue fans
Current stuff I'll be keeping -
780 watt OCZ ModXstream PSU (if the wires are too short I will cry)
2x 500 GB Samsung spinpoints
Acer G24 monitor
Saitek Cyborg keyboard + command unit
Razer Deathadder GW edition mouse
Creative Gigaworks 7.1 speakers
DVD RW drive
Ummm, and I have to lose my X Fi Elite Pro as I have no more PCI slots and use onboard sound for the moment.
Vista 64 bit will need reactivating on a new, I mean, SAME PC :p.
My old stuff is on Ebay to cheapen the upgrade.
Graphics cards are already here, the rest will be here tomorrow, but the case on monday :(.
Now, I hope Intel dont go and release a better socket for a long time.
*A little drool dribblez down chin. More drool will dribble said chin tomorrow, even more on monday, and a heart attack may occur when benchmarking*
Must also remember that Patriot Ram modules are not food for *chomp - om nom nom*, no matter how tasty they may look.

Seems overkill consider you're only using a 24" monitor.
You could have save some money on the 2x4870 and get one 4890 and be done with it.
Could also get a smaller PSU, something like 550W will be fine.
Might also need to buy some extra fans to cool your 6x2GB ram

Re: The most superest, uberest, 13373St PC I ever built
I already have this PSU, it was on an Aria super special for £58, however, I fear that the cables may be too short for the Antec P182.
The 4870s were bought because because they were on offer too for £154 and I can sell my current 4850s for the same as what I paid for them thanks to the recent price increases.
I have an Antec Spot cool fan that I use over my ram. The patriot ram was also a very good price for £88 per pair.
I buy components when they are on offers like these because they dont despiciate in value too much and can be sold when I find the next offer.
Though yes it is an overkill, after selling my current components, the total cost will have been around £300-400 for the upgrade.

If you look at the "Current Bargains" you could see that both the 4890 and 4830 are on offer, which makes your 4870 offer not as good as it seems. HUKD also listed 4870 on sale.
Have to say, "Today Only" on SCAN doesn't always means a bargain.
Nevertheless, amazing spec you have there. You just need to save up for a 30 inch to go with it.

It must make you sick that in 12 months we'll all be able to get one of these at half the money you spent on it ;)

Nice - but 12gb? Out of interest - what do you think will use that? And do you understand how Windows manages memory per-process (i.e. how much can be addressed by a single exe)?

RAM Drive? ;) Wouldn't it be nice to run a computer that shifted most of your OS / programs and storage into physical memory on boot up and basically just hibernated itself onto permanent storage on power-down.
Would that even be possible?

Well, not always. In 14 months time after buying my old parts, the prices actually went up =D.
But the CPU / Motherboard / Graphics cards may drop a bit lower, but I doubt it.
Only the ram will definately drop in price, that will make me :(. But £88 for 6 GB is still a good price.

Stuff over the next few years maybe :p. I'll be keeping it for a long time. Vista benefits from more ram up to 8 GB, I've not seen any comparisons with 12 GB yet though.

Windows Vista and 7 do exactly that (pre-caching anyway). Problem is, I doubt 12gb needs to be cached ;) Oh, and hibernation to disc will of course take a fair while to write out 12gb of data ;)

4gb is a the sweet spot for me - but yeah, I reckon 8gb can make sense too. Law of diminishing returns n'all that tho dude ;)
Not that i'm knocking you - look at me with my one kilowatt PSU ;)

That is worse then £88 for + 6 GB or ram.
My 780 watt OCZ PSU only has 2x PCI-E connectors, and only 4 molex connectors!!!
So I have two 1 > 3 molex splitters on the way. I will use one cable to power one 6 pin input per graphics card with the converter cable, and a couple of fans, so should be fine with 2 left for everything else.
The problem is that my PSU Cables are short, but the P182 is the same height as my current case, just that the PSU goes at the bottom. If the wires dont reach the Motherboard and CPU connectors, I will be unhappy :(.

Looks good, if a bit overkill. Make sure you do some crunching on it :)

Two HD4870s in a single-slot spacing board. Ouch, they're going to run hot, you might want to up the fan speeds.
