Any limit on home network plugs?
Hi guys,
I've got a home network electricity socket setup with two plugs.
One is connected to my router, the other to my HTPC in another room.
I'm thinking of getting a NAS drive (Icybox 4220B), which I shall probably put in the garage.
Can I connect it with another network plug? That would mean two "systems" running off one connection from the Router. I can't see any logical problem with this: the NAS box wouldn't be going on line for anything, just sharing movies and music with the other machines. The only thing I can think of is that with two "systems" running from one connection to the router, speeds might be altered, but they're not going to be doing anything speed dependant anyway.
And the fact that the plugs are sold singly would imply, to me, that you can just keep adding. Any thoughts?

Yeah you can do this, but like wireless, the more devices you have connected at the same time, the lower the bandwidth available to each.
Streaming could be an issue as it is more dependant on continuous data rates than normal web usage.

Hmmmm.... OK, interesting. Thanks for that. Assuming nothing else on the network is accessing the net, etc, and I'm streaming, let's say, a 4gb mkv or an .iso dvd image to the HPTC, I'd imagine the necessary bitrate would still be not massive, so potential problem free? And MP3s, I'd imagine, would be little problem if the network was made of string and tin cans @ 5meg each :)

good Topic i too would like to know this as i too have a icybox and a drobo wishing to stream videos and wanting to know the same if the plugs could handle such instances i will be having my devices upstairs and having my tv downstairs both areas

Indeed. For all intensive purposes, homeplug is identical to wireless, with the major exception of the transmission medium, home electrical wiring instead of the air, hence why it has a bit of a bandwidth advantage over wireless. But it pretty much comes with the same downsides, except it's not as easy to interface with from an external source.
