Good Reliable Extension Cable/Surge Protector

After having my Belkin Surge Protector fail twice and causing damage to my PC on both occasions (it just came back from repair today - with a nice new Corsair 850w TX PSU) I was thinking of changing my Surge Protector to something a little more stable/reliable, what would you guys recommend that should help ensure my PC's survivability, the only stipulation i have is that its at least 3-5 meters in length

Hope someone can help
/Ste

UPS?

Protects better than a surge protector does, although it'll cost you quite a bit (for a decent one). Worth it if you want to protect an expensive bit of kit though

Re: Good Reliable Extension Cable/Surge Protector

That's crazy! I've had some surgeguard thing that I'm certain is straight off the high street for at least 5 years now, and while I wouldn't be remotely surprised if it failed to actually prevent an electricity surge, I would be extremely upset if it damaged my PC. I thought Belkin were a good make - and for something like an extension lead, you'd think that wouldn't be hard to achieve.

Re: Good Reliable Extension Cable/Surge Protector

Belkin does not produce the best quality products. Indeed, they are quite poor. It's mainly marketing hype (*cough*pcworld*cough*). I took apart one of their superdooper DSL RJ11 cables - they cable pairs were twisted in completely the wrong way.

If you want quality surge protection and lightening assistance (not 100% protection - a direct hit will kill everything) get Furse protectors. They are, however, expensive. http://www.furse.com/ - RSwww.com and Farnell sold them last time I checked.

Or, just get an APC Smart-UPS. Do not use a surge protector inbetween the UPS and mains power.
