I just received a e5200 retail and looking through the wee instruction manual makes no mention of applying thermal paste, does it not require any?
Bear in mind the last cpu i installed was a s939 3200+.

The less you are, the less you express your own life, the more you have, the greater is your alienated life, the greater is the store of your estranged being." Karl Marx
The paste should be 'pre-applied' to the cooler. but, do check first. If your using another cooler, use a paste of your choice.
The arctic cooling site gives descriptions of best methods of application for different CPU types.
Are you using the stock HSF? If so, then it's the applied (The grey goo on the bottom).
EDIT: Oops, beaten by a ninja poster.
As Sputnik said, if you bought the retail version there *should* be a nice, neat, thin square of silver thermal paste on the base of the stock cooler - but it is *always* worth checking (and, if your cooler doesn't have any on, complaining to your retailer ).
The main thing with applying your own paste (if you ever reseat the chip / fan, swap components around etc.) is to make sure you use as little as possible - excess paste actually reduces the effectiveness of the heat transfer.
ahh sweet, my hs has three strips of charcoal silver on the bottom, must be it.
cheers.
I've noticed intel have made installing heatsinks much easier than they were when I was messing around with athlons and having to clamp them on whilst stabbing towards my mobo with a screw driver.

You mean the pushpins? There's great debate about whether they're good enough for "proper" cooling or whether you should use a screw-through with backplate My personal opinion is that they're absolutely fine for stock cooling, and for computers that you don't move around much.
Yeh the E5200 usually comes with thermal compound already applied to the CPU Stock Cooler...if ur planning on using another CPU Cooler, I recommend buying Arctic Cooling 5 - use this myself and boy does it make a difference in heat disipation and distribution to the cooler! As someone else said further up, get on the Arctic Cooling website and check out the different ways of applying to the various CPUs...
