    Quad Core

    Howdy y'all,

I've decided to go Quad Core, at the moment, I have an E7200.

I'm considering either a Q6700 or Q8400. Bearing in mind, I probably won't be overclocking as I don't think my motherboards much good at it, which would be the better for gaming (i.e. GTA IV, COD4, Red Alert 3, Crysis and Far Cry 2)

Will the cache of the Q6700 benefit, or the 333MHz FSB of the Q8400?

My budget would preferably be roughly no higher than £140.

    Cheers,

At the same overall speed, cache is much more important than FSB, but then if the 8400 is penryn and the 6700 conroe, then penryn performs a bit faster per clock again, so in all likelyhood they'll be very similar and you won't be able to tell much difference

Ok, brill. One thing I would like to see, is the differences in power consumption between the two. I know the TDP is 95W for both, but nobody seems to have reviewed the Q8400 properly.

Q6700 and Q8400 shouldn't be too far away from their slower relatives so I'd say go for Q8400. Should be easier on the mainboard VRM circuitry too

Nice one, thanks for the link. I didn't realise phenoms we're so power consuming!

I might try overclocking to 400 FSB, but not sure how good my board is at it! lol

    Thanks once again all!

    Hi,

I only need the cpu, in fact I will have to get rid of a few bits and pieces tbh.

If I remember correctly the Phenom II are considerably more power efficient.

Yeah, i've heard good things about Phenom II. For me though, I wanna keep the system i've got now and upgrade using cheap and practical methods.
