Phenom II X3 720 overclocking review when compared to the E7500 and Q6600

    Interesting review:

    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpu...ii-x3-720-be/6

Even though the E7500 overclocks better it is slower in many of the benchmarks.

But it's faster in games which is the main thing right?

The Phenom II X3 720 seems to be much faster than the E7500 in Crysis and Far Cry 2.

I think that AMD needs to release its 45nm dual cores as quickly as possible though. The X2 7750+ and X2 7850+ are excellent processors but consume too much power and do not overclock as well as the E5200.

I noticed in Anandtech's review of the new X2 4850 they pretty much said games is the only thing it was good for. Well, that and heating the room up

    Linkey

Those core2 chips need lots of cache to feed them.

Oops sorry I misread the bit I was quoting, meant to say that the phenom is faster in games and that's all that matters

    You mean X2 7850 don't you?!

The X2 7850 is a 65nm processor based on the older Phenom architecture. The newer Phenom II is a 45nm processor with more cache and higher clockspeeds which has much lower idle and load power consumption. At stock speeds the X2 7750+ and X2 7850+ are actually faster than the E5200 in most benchmarks:

    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpu...-cpus-review/5

The E5300 is still over £60 at most retailers still. The X2 7850+ is well under £60(and the X2 7750+ is under £50 now) and has some excellent budget AMD(760G,780G and 780V chipsets) and Nvidia(8200 and 8300 chipsets) motherboards available for it for around £50 to £60.

For under £250 you could build the following AMD based system:

    X2 7750+ ~ £49

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?W...source=froogle

    J&W 780G motherboard with 128mb of DDR2 for the HD3200 integrated graphics card ~ £55

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/JandW...RAID-uATX-HDCP

The IGP seems to overclock very well and can reach the performance level of an HD3450(not bad for light gaming).

    2gb DDR2 ~ £27

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/2GB-(...d-CAS-4-4-4-12

    Coolermaster Elite 340 case with 460w PSU ~ £54

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=944400

    Akasa 120mm PWM case fan ~ £6

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/120mm...WM-Cooling-Fan

    Samsung 250gb hard drive ~ £36

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/250GB...ache-89-ms-NCQ

Samung SATA DVD writer with Lightscribe ~ £18

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Samsu...k-OEM-plusNero

    Total ~ £246

You could also add a cheap 20" LCD monitor and a keyboard and mouse combo and have a total system for around £350.

Cheap 20" monitors for under £100 too :

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/162389

Cheap wireless keyboard and mouse combo:

Install a copy of Windows 7 RC1 and you will have a great system for not much money.
