    Some recommendations please

hi, i'm trying to build a decent pc so i can do my semi-pro video editing on, so far i've got an abit IC7 motherboard and a 3ghz P4. i could do with some ideas for other components. i want to keep the budget as cheap as possible (still being a student) but dont mind having to pay the extra money for something if it's worth it for my system. I will probably go for something like the interest free option on scan and dabs when spending over £300/400 etc..

Please let me know what you think

I was thinking about 1gb for definite, probably 2paired 512mb corsair value select. any other suggestions?

i need a graphics card with dual monitor capability and nice max resolution (ideally hooked up to a tv monitor for reviewing playback), i'm not gonna be playing games so 3d isn't a big importance.

i was thinking about going for a black zorro case or the xenon black one from www.microcity.co.uk as neither are too expensive. anyone know where i can get detailed pics of the zorro case? whats the manufacturers web address?

i need a good dual format dvd writer, looking to spend upto £90-100, but which do i pick?

another hard drive to go with my 40gb one i already have, SATA would be nice, any suggestions?

i need an adsl modem or modem/router

also some decent/cheap 5.1 speakers to go with motherboard

likewise with keyboard/mouse combo but not that important.

as for monitors i haven't decided if i need 2 yet, want to get graphics card first and see how premiere pro's workspace looks on 1 19" monitor 1st before i decide if i need 2.

sorry for being long winded, but any suggestions would help, most important things i need help with are graphics card, adsl modem/router (need to set up with btyahoo broadband), ram, and dvd writer

    thanks

    Corsair are good.

Graphics card, you could go with a 9600XT or a Geforce 5900

Get yourself a good case, ive had a few steel and plastic, tacky cases in the past, but once you own a nice case it makes a difference.

NEC 8x DVD DUAL R/RW from Ebuyer http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=56658

    Get yourself a Seagate HDD

Speakers, get yourself some Z-640 5.1 Logitch from ebuyer, I have the 4.1, they sound brilliant. http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=43254

I'd say a 9600 (pro/XT) for graphics, and Corsair for RAM should be fine.

thanks for the tips, those speakers are sweet, shame they aren't high on my priorities or i'd get them straight away.

i was hoping to not spend too much on a graphics card but if its going to be worth it i guess i will (does anyone know if it comes with a convertor to make the DVI connection a SVGA one.

Any ideas about which case to get? how would you rate the zorro black case? any good?

any idea on an adsl modem/router?

also, i was thinking of getting an iiyama 19" vision master, i've never tried using premiere pro or 6.5 with a 19" monitor so i'm not sure how well the premiere workspace will fit on the screen. anyone know if it will look ok? or if i'd be better getting 2 17" monitors or even 2 19" ones (doubt i'll have room for those though)

cheers for the help so far

If a GFX card only has a DVI socket, then a DVI to D-SUB converter is supplied.

    Have a look at these:

    Hmm, here we go:

All the graphics card recomendations made above are WRONG.

As long as you don't want to play 3D games, Matrox give the ultimate in image quality especially for workstations wanting dual monitor output. They specialise in this kind of thing.

The older G550 dual head 32Mb can be had for £70 from www.dabs.com. (This should be fine for you)
    http://www.matrox.com/mga/products/g...aldvi/home.cfm

The more modern P650 64Mb can be had for £100 from www.dabs.com.
    http://www.matrox.com/mga/products/m...eries/p650.cfm

I don't think you need the P750 triple head...

I think the case looks tacky - but it treally is your choice.

Get a Western Digital WD1200JD 120Gb SATA for ultimate speed and reliability. £70 from www.ebuyer.com

LiteON make good value for money DVD Buners, an 8x DVD+/- one can be had for £72 from www.microdirect.co.uk.

btw. I think that you can do a lot better than www.microcity.co.uk.

    How about this case?
    http://www.xcase.co.uk/acatalog/Jeantech_Nobless__.html

I would say don't spend all that money on Corsair memory - it's not all it's cracked up to be. Really, GeiL from www.overclockers.co.uk at £120 for 2x512Mb is a better buy.

Also, I wouldn't have blown all that money on an IC7. The SiS655FX chipset also support dual channel DDR400, and is just as good as the 865PE, which is in in turn, almost as good as the 875P. The Asus P4S800D can be had for £55.

    Hope this helps.
