do you need to get windows into the £100... or have an alternative?
No need for windows will use windows 7 RC.
This is what I would look for:
1.)Intel E2160 processor ~ £20 to £30 with cooler from Ebay
2.)2gb DDR2 ~ £10 to £15
3.)Socket 775 motherboard ~ £20 to £25 from Ebay
4.)80GB hard disk - £10 and under from Ebay
5.)DVD drive ~ £5 from Ebay
6.)Case with PSU ~ £20
I'm not sure it can quite be done using retail parts, but you can make a nice box if you extend the budget to £140. I recommend you bear in mind that saving money on the psu is not always wise if it is inefficient as it costs more money in the long run!
I might consider building a system based on the energy efficient AMD X2s instead using a 780G mobo (which can be had for £50). Might get you significantly more performance for your £.
Si tacuisses, philosophus mansisses
does it have to be core2?
or can it be AM2?
and what flexibility is there in the £100?
I can suggest a Core-2 based (Celeron 1400, in fact) new build for < £150 - that's about as cheap as I can get though and no promises on how well anything works!! Ebay is definitely your friend if you want cheaper than that: or keep an eye on the "for sale" forum here at Hexus!
Or, if you are based anywhere near manchester, I have a couple of old cases with PSUs I need to get rid of, and I could probably throw in a CD-RW combi drive if you'll come and collect it! PM me if you're interested
Thanks for suggestions it doesn't have to be core duo if their are cheaper AMD x2 around.
