Problem with new shuttle
Just built my first shuttle - SK41G. Took my time got everything together - XP2200, 512mb stick of generic 266 memory, floppy, DVD/CDRW and small HDD. Plugged it all in and first press of start button the fan whirs for about half a second and then shuts off and nowt else happens. Little green light comes on to show power is there. Cleared cmos, looked at jumper settings but a bit lost for what to do next, apart from sit and admire it's looks.
Any help would be appreciated.
cheers

reset it by unplugging everything and resetting jumper - what is 'soft' resetting?

What GFX card have you got in it ? If its an ATI that requires an extra power source (either from a floppy power plug or molex) then its probably causing the PSU to trip the over-voltage protection. The cards draw a lot of power on bootup and cause the over-voltage protection to kick in.
You can test it by booting up without the power cable plugged into the GFX card and after a few seconds plug it in. This is usually enough of a delay to stop the voltage spiking as any other devices have already powered up.
There are several ways to fix the problem :
1) Swap your PSU for another one that doesn't have the voltage protection.
2) Replace the PSU with the Shuttle Silent-X 250W PSU.
3) Contact Shuttle and they will arrange an RMA for your PSU and replace it with one without voltage protection.
4) Splice something between the GFX card and PSU that will delay the voltage for a few seconds after bootup.
This probelm may also affect Nvidia cards but I can't recall reading anything mentioning them. Personally I had this problem on a brand new SB75G2 and a 9700 Pro AIW but I wanted a SilentX 250W PSU anyway.
Apparently this is not a problem on newer cards as ATI fixed whatever was causing it.

Soft-resetting:
1. Unplug PSU mains cable at the back
2. Wait a few seconds
3. Press the INSERT key and keep it pressed during the rest of the following steps
4. Reconnect PSU mains cable
5. Power on.

I'll try that - at the moment there's no gfx card in there. Thought i'd get it set up with the onboard video - tried it with a variety of things plugged in to none at all.
cheers for the help.

Finally got this sorted. I was using the shim that came with the package. Never used one before but thought I'd use it on this occasion. I realised that the paste on the cpu was hardly disturbed so obviously not much contact with HSF. Removed the shim and everything booted up perfect. It must have been shutting down as a safety measure. Feel like a plank, a happy one now though.

Glad you got it sorted. I had the very same problem with my SN41G2 first time I set it up.
If you boot it with the case off, you should see a red LED come on on the mobo that indicates safety shutdown due to overheating. I'm still uing the shim. I just took the ICE cooler off and reseated it and it booted first time.
You might wanna put the shim back on and just tighten the screws on the ICE with a screwdriver. I did mine until it was tight enough so it would take considerable force to tighten it any further. The shim shoud prevent you overtighening and crushing the core anyway.
