Ok, an update - I purchased (insipired by the great advice from scaryjim and Cat-the-fifth ) :

AMD Phenom II X3 720

Asus 760G motherboard

4gb of DDR2 @ 800.

Now I'm just looking for a HDD and graphics card - the daily deals on scan usually offer up something nice, but any further advce would be welcome

Sounds like a good set-up, though was that the black edition or standard 720 you bought?

Probably wise holding out on the graphics (considering the motherboard has it built in) but should let you assess the case, and what will/won't fit

EDIT: Keep an eye out on the 4870 prices, they have approached the £100 pound mark from the release of the 4770 so you could get a pretty impressive rig put together for peanuts! HEXUS REPORT

Yeah, I figure that waiting for the graphics card is a safe option - hopefully my beast of an 8800 will fit in for the time being

Considering that the HD4850 costs £86 at Scan perhaps the HD4870 will start dropping in price towards the £100 mark.

I think this all adds up to a decent rig - all for £400!!
