1080p problems

playing a film at 1080p (well, 1920x900 ish but you know ...) having problems with playback

OS: 64bit windows 7 7100
Dual Core @ 2Ghz
9600GT
2GB memory
.mkv file

first of all, vlc is a disaster on 64 bit 7, won't play anything well. smplayer works MUCH better, plays all my other stuff but still struggles with this particular file. audio is fine, but video is unacceptably jumpy. any thoughts why this is with my hardware, or just a dodgy encode (i've done it a few times to be sure with same results)
or do i need to change me settings/reduce resolution with handbrake

thoughts?

if its HDMI it may be a handshake issue, try the VGA output

It is the only codec pack you will ever need. It has everything.

I have always hated VLC. It can play almost anything but having bad experiences when playing certain types of video left me extremely unimpressed.

The CCCP and MPC (Home Cinema) combination cannot be beaten when it comes to media play back.

If the day comes when CCCP and MPC fail me, i will definately give it a try.

I see VLC as a swiss army knife... it does everything you want it to smoothly, and most of the time it's the only tool you'll need. When it comes to every day usage though, you can usually find something better suited. A lot of people I know who watch a lot of film/television on their PCs really hate VLC with a vengeance... over the top in my opinion, but they certainly prefer codecs + lighter players.
