    new biostar ta790gx 128m DOA ?

recieved my new biostar ta790gx 128m this afternoon , removed my old motherboard etc and fitted the new board . fitted ram and cpu etc , went to power it up and nothing . tried different ram and got same result so i changed my cpu from the phenom II 720BE to my old athlon x2 7750BE and still same result , so i tried my old windsor x2 6000 and still no post although fans are spinning . the onboard led's are not on so i removed eveything , refitted my old mobo and everything works fine . so i tried it out of the case with the same results , surely it cannot be a dead board ?

While Biostar seem to be attempting to break into the enthusiast market, they have traditionally made very cheap boards that have problems, coupled with bad support.

I've had great success with several Biostar boards, going back over 12 years. I think you were just unlucky.

    Re: new biostar ta790gx 128m DOA ?

Yep, my first board was a Biostar 8500TVG (Intel 430VX) and it would probably still be going today if a dodgy power connector (on the the PSU side) hadn't melted the power connector pins off the board. Being based on the 430VX it was slow, but it was rock-solid.

Next one was a M6VCG board back in 2000 which came as part of a Quantex computer. This board is still running 24/7 in my file server. I check it periodically for signs of bad capacitors (due to it being from that era) but touch-wood it's still running like a champ. I thought I lost it once, after we had a power cut during a BIOS update, but Biostar posted me a replacement BIOS chip, free of charge, from their German office which got me going again.

After that I built several systems around the M7NCD board, again all of which worked great and then I had a couple of those iDEQ systems, again great machines who have been sold on to friends and family. When I had the M7NCD I built another system with an Abit NF7-S2G board (basically just because the M7NCD had been discontinuted and the Abit board was the closest in price and chipset), which was a nightmare in comparison.

I then moved onto EPoX and MSI boards, mainly because they had designs/layouts that I wanted and Biostar didn't, but my next board will probably be another Biostar because their 790GX with sideport memory look great. MSI are great with providing BIOS updates for older boards, but I've never been as satisfied as I was with Biostar.

I think that people aren't aware of Biostar because for years they were mainly an OEM manufacturer (like Foxconn with Dell) and supplied boards for companies such as Fujitsu(-Siemens) and the Fountain Tech group (Quantex, Cybermax, Pionex etc.).

Sorry for taking this OT, but just adding my $0.02

I agree, they existed and catered for the budget minded enthusiast long before the Biostar TPower I45. Some crackers from biostar going all the way back to 754

Just a tad unlucky to the OP, my Biostar TA790GX A2+ has been running superbly since dec 08. The rebels haven forum provides a huge resource for the majority of biostar boards

My only BIOSTAR board ever did the same thing, the PSU was useless as well as the connector was part of the board afterwards
