Re: Fixing a laptop screen?
Where did he buy it from, and was it advertised "sold as seen" or as having a cracked screen? If not he can probably get his money back - that'd be my first course of action. Otherwise just ring round some repair companies and get quotes. If you need a model number there should be a sticker on it somewhere with serial numbers etc. that you can put into the HP website and get full details...
Re: Fixing a laptop screen?
If the above advice proves to be too expensive, it may be cheaper to buy an old lp (being sold for spares) of the same make/model from somewhere like ebay (just make sure the screen is operational first) and swap the screen.

I agree I used to buy laptops with broken screens and ebay was always the best place to get replacements.
Re: Fixing a laptop screen?
a screen is normally pretty easy to swap out if you can find a replacement
Re: Fixing a laptop screen?
Laptop screens are easy to do, do them here all the time...
Re: Fixing a laptop screen?
I had a broken screen about 2 years ago and screen replacement cost me 90 quids (current exchange rate) in Hong Kong. That is for a 14" screen. These aren't expensive but the main problem is sourcing the panel in UK.
Re: Fixing a laptop screen?
I've never had any trouble sourcing screens here in the UK.
Best thing to do is strip the panel out of its casing and then look on the back of it, there will be a sticker and from that you'll be able to find the correct replacement panel.
