Hi to everyone - From Atari 800 to Q6700

Hi there to everyone here.

Actually my 3rd post as my 1st two posts are in the Abit forum area about my Q6700 CPU and 8GB Ram.

Still, that's quite a step up from my 1st REAL computer (after my Atari VCS) which was an Atari 800 (not the later XL model) but they 1st ones that were sold by Ingersol Electronics in the UK.

My list of machine is something like:

Binatone Black/White Tennis Game (pong)
Colour Version of the above.
Atari VCS (1st decent console that came with Space Invaders)
Atari 800 Computer (16K) that cost me £650 and I paid £300 for a 96K floppy drive that was so fast!
Sinclair Spectrum (still had my Atari of course)
Commodore 64
Yamaha MSX Music computer (with real Piano keyboard which came with it)
Acorn Achimedes
Amiga 500
486sx 25Mhx machine. (the 1st time I played doom and how fantastic it was I felt at the time - and still do!)
Pentium 120 machine.
Celeron 600 machine (clocked to 900)
AMD64 3200+ machine
Core2duo E6600 machine
And just upgraded it to a Q6700 machine.

So, I've tasted it all, and feel so lucky that no other generation (apart from mine) had had the joy of living thru the very start of the microchip to where we are today.
And sampling it at every step of the way................

Only a shame now we (the chip makers) have all hit a bit of a brick wall, and the early years excitement of new and great leaps in tech have been replaced with a few mhz each year if you're lucky.

Welcome to you..i started out with the Grandstand video game system in about 1977-ish and worked my way up through the Speccy days like you..now i have about my 159th PC configuration.

That's a nice history of equipment! - Mine hasn't been quite that extensive, but I do miss my old Spectrum with the rubber keys (I do still have a SAM Coupe though - a souped up spectrum like clone - but it can display sixteen colours at once!!).

I too had an Atari 800 and I remember paying 300 quid for a 1050 disk drive!

The old Atari's had some cracking features for the time, with all the peripherals being able to daisychain. and in it's later life some cracking games like rescue on fractalus and dropzone.

Since the original 800, i also had a 130XE, 520St, 1040ST, Amiga, then started with a 486 sx25 and various machines since.

Still got the first computer I ever built at home - a Nascom 2! That really was building - soldering all the IC sockets and components into the mobo!

Ex-console and game developer Atari late last week decided to sue ... Desktop: Core2 E7200 | Corsair 2gb DDR2-800 | Gigabyte EP35-DS3L ... which performs better than E6850 and beats Q6700 in most cases but its very expensive. Crysis @ high with 1920x1200 resolution = 29 FPS which is very acceptable ...

That's an awesome list of PC's, and you've made some colossal jumps.. Celery 600@900 to AMD A64 3200,,, that musta made you smile for weeks

I'm not sure my old gret matter is good enough for this recall, but I shall try:
I started on PC's very late.

Pentium 100, upgrade to 133 and from 16mb to 32mb
Pentium2 350 with AGP, then to Celeron 333@450 same mobo
Althon Slot (A or 1?) 550, self modded and jumpers resoldered etc to 650, wouldn't go higher
Athlon Socket A loads of cpu's finishing with AXIA 1gig at 1.4 with SK6 and Delta screamer fan, all lapped by moi
Athlon 1700 XP at 2600 speed, with various of those cpus including last of the unlocked and first of the locked Bartons 2500's cpu's (made me v angry, so DR swapped it for me)
Athlon 64 S939 (the best performance hike of them all in my opinion) and then to dual core S939 finishing in an X3800 at 2.4 per core, and in one of my good friends PC, still playing literally everything that he throws at it.
And now for me the holy grail... didn't need a Quad, but got one anyway..QX6700 with 4 gig on a non overclockable, rock solid, unbreakable Intel SFF mobo.

This thread inspired me to find out what my first PC was, seeing as I knew nothing about PCs at the time and have never been able to find it on the web - it turns out that it was one of these ugly lumps.

Windows 95, 486 66MHz, 8MB RAM and approximately 600MB hard drive.

I loved that PC!

The first PC I actually bought for myself was from a local little PC seller (one of the ones who are sure there's loads of money to be made building PCs for people then goes out of business 6 months later!), and featured a Duron 1200 and 128MB PC133 on a PC-Chips M810L mobo (I've recently read a website that describes this as "the worst Socket A motherboard ever made"). As bad as the mobo was meant to be I ran it very happily on Win XP and Windows 2000 Server until a couple of months ago, at which point I sold it with an Athlon XP 2000+ and 512MB RAM for ~ £30!

The first item of computing equipment I ever owned was an Atari 1600 - the one with the fake wood panels!

I was lucky that by the time I got to the 3rd year of secondary school, they started a Computer Studies course which I took as one of my options.

This was the beast we had in the computer room (a converted cloakroom at the time, could get 2 people max in there)

Just look at those specs, and the case was a similar size to a 486 era desktop.

Now I feel old...

Wang International 8086 - 5mb Winchester HDD and an on/off switch you would use to turn off a coal power station.
IBM 8088 - coprocessor fun!
Commodore (!) 286 machine, was probably the first SFF PC! (in comparison, it's probably the size of most midi tower machines these days)
386 SX 16, DX33
486 SX 25, DX2 66, AMD DX4/5 133
Pentium 60, Pentium 166MMX.
AMD K6 200, K6 300
Celeron 366@605
Thunderbird 1.2ghz
Athlon XP 3200
