Question Need help with my WHS

Hey guys basically I have ran out of space on my Windows Home Server.

But the problem is, i have also run out of HDD slots in my case AND SATA slots. i have already put a caddy in to convert the 51/2 inch bays to 3.5. So what i think i may need to do is get some sata pci controller cards? I already have two but i think they may be using the express slots. will need to double check. Anyone know of any good ones that dont come with raid as i dont need raid with the whs? Also the more drives these cards can hold the better. The two i have now only hold two drives. I'd ideally like 4 or more....

The next problem is that i have no space left in my case. So what are my options to deal with this? Short of getting a whole new case which would be really hard to change as if i put the drives back in the wrong slots etc it could corrupt my whole server....

You can see the specification of my WHS in my signature.

Any help is appreciated! You will be suprised how much space you can use when you turn duplication on....

If i could go back now i probably would have rebuilt my WHS differently but i dont see now how to fix this without major hardware changes such as a new motherboard and a server tower case and invalidating my oem WHS OS licence.

But I am open to all ideas guys so left me know

    Many thanks!!

    Mark

Re: Need help with my WHS

If you have an e-sata input on the mobo you could add one of the extenders that tranquil offer. It would take another drive. Otherwise I think you may need to fully upgrade the server!

Re: Need help with my WHS

    Dam dam dam lol

I think if i upgade the server it will void my oem licence

Is there no internal pci cards you can get that would hold 4 or more drives? Like controller cards?

Im just reading your thread now btw about a whs i'll reply in a minute if i have anything useful to add but if you need any information ont it feel free to pm me.

But just for curiosity what bits on my home server would i have to upgrade and how much is it likely to cost me?

Re: Need help with my WHS

You should be able to reactivate Windows on rebuilding the server - you just need to promise that you've taken the software off the old machine and retired it from use. At least, you can do that for XP, and I can't imagine Microsoft would do that for XP Home but not for Home Server...?

Other option is (as suggested) migrate the 600GB drives to 1.5 TB.

Out of interest, how and to what do you back up all that data?

Re: Need help with my WHS

Basically anything ive ever bought ive backed up some way or another. I dont like dvd disks so i back them up. SAme for my blu-rays. and all my music cds are backed up as wav.THen you turn on duplication as a backup device on WHS and everything gets double so a 25gb Disk then equals 50gb etc etc

Basically i just end the data from my main computer over to the WHS using the shared folders network path.

Yea i see what you mean about replacing each drive seperatly. I think thats the only way forward.

I would have preferred to buy a big Icy box enclosure, get a pci card which converts to 4 or more sata slots and then have done it that way though. Is that not possible?

Is that with or without duplication? I'd would do it this way. Turn off duplication on all shares, remove hard drive (using the official prodecure, and not just yanking it out). Replace with new one (bigger HHD?). And repeat as neccesary.

I'm pretty sure you can re-build the server with all your data intact too. The same way you can convert a trial into a complete OEM version, well more of re-install the server really, but it keeps all your data and stuff intact.

And I think I'd only turn on duplication for the stuff that I couldn't replace - if you have the original DVDs, there isn't really any need to duplicate the ripped version because if the drive fails, you can just re-rip from the source.

It might be worth spending a bit of time thinking about your data management and how it is organised.
