Unless you have games struggling with your 8800GT I would not upgrade. Sure, it will be a decent performance increase going to HD4870 1gb but the longer you wait the bigger the performance increase you will see. If you have an SLI capable motherboard adding another 8800GT would make more sense though.

your card would be worth about £50-£55 going by forum and ebay prices. That's top-ish end prices, too. You might find on forums people will not pay more than £50 inclusive of postage, maybe even a tad less.

Been looking for one myself actually.

    Re: 512mb 8800GT - 1GB ATI 4870 worth it ?

I'd like to know the answer too! I'm tempted to replace the 8800GT purely because of the heat output, my case is a front venting PC-A05 and it really heats up the room between the 8800GT and the overclocked Q6600...

On the plus side at least the components are kept at nice cool temps...

    Re: 512mb 8800GT - 1GB ATI 4870 worth it ?

could always mod the case and have a top facing fan above, or use an extractor fan on one of the pci brackets.

I like that case a lot but the heat build up is such a problem with cards like yours, perhaps sell it and grab an 8800 GTS 512MB second hand, then you'll have a dual slot cooler that pushes air out the back.

But if you want more performance as well, best to go with something newer.

Agree with CAT-THE-FIFTH, 4870s are dropping in price but may be worth waiting for something even better.

So did mine until I replaced the graphics cooler with this:

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=57&subcat=787

My stock cooler ran at 50degC Idle and 80degC on load.

Now I am 38degC Idle and 58degC load.

For £11 I figured it would keep me going until the new DX11 cards come out in summer.

    Re: 512mb 8800GT - 1GB ATI 4870 worth it ?

A few months ago I did exactly that, the main reason was I had gone from a 19" to a 22" LCD and the 8800GT started to show slight signs of struggling and as I like to see a lot of candy I went for the upgrade which did the trick.

The 8800GT512 when over-clocked can still hold it's own in 1280x1024 in my opinion.

I doubt you would get £50 for it. Not here anyway, but possibly on Ebay.

I sold my BFG 8800GTS G92 here (better card), and it went for £50
