whats your budget:
top end, £250 up intel core i7
middle range, £100-£200 AMD Phenom II
bottom range, <£100 Intel core2
edit: prices are for the CPU only
well 90~130
so im guessing amd is better.
but then why do people buy intel for £150? or prices like that
thanks burrellhead:rockon2:
intel fans, nd intel were best before phenomII came out:)
Anyway what is the budget for the whole system??
for the whole system i am wanting to spend £800~£900
thanks burrellhead
For £113.70 you can get a Phenom II X3 (three core) black edition 720, which runs at 2.8GHz, and is mena be very easy to overclock:).
If you are not so into overclocking, then Phenom II X3 710, which runs at 2.6GHz, but is not quite as overclocking friendly (locked multiplier) for £99.81.
Or for £140.97 you can get a Phenom II X4 (four core) 810, which runs at 2.6GHz.
They are all the newer AM3 socket type
For mobo this is menna be a good overclocker:http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=998660 with the new SB710 southbridge, however it is only an AM2 board (still compatable with the CPU's selected, but missing some of the AM3 features).
For AM3 I would be looking at http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/DFI-L...-SATA-RAID-ATX for £140, which has duel channel DDR3 memory, fullspeed 3-way crossfireX and loads of connectivity. Also DFI are a good make.
For £110 there is http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-...A-RAID-ATX-VGA from Asus with duel channel DDR3 memory, full speed crossfireX, but a little less connectivity.
GPU I would look at this http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-X...-DL-DVI-I-HDTV as it is an excellent price ATM, dropped form ~£190 to ~£160 this week, and would be good for up to 24" monitor gameing.
Alternativly you could get a 4770 in crossfire:http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/512MB...5-21149-00-20R
it will be used for downloading, a bit of gaming, searching the web and listning to music

Edited Build
You can drop the HD4870X2 down to a HD4890 which is available for around £163:
http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx
I would drop the PSU for the 525w version for around £76:
http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx
There are few 24" monitors here for around £150:
http://www.ebuyer.com/search?page=1&...12&subcat=2097
This should still give you a decent amount of cash for peripherals.

http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?W...source=froogle

but i think i will get an amd Phenom
thanks burrellhead:rockon2:
Cool, that case looks allright, and I would go with the system that cat said above... above budget again tho, when you add os, keyboard , mouse and speackers.
Remember that you get free delivory with scan for having more than 20 posts tho
Edited Build 2

http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx
Enermax 525w ~ £75
http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx
4gb DDR2 ~ £41
http://www.scan.co.uk/Index.aspx?NT=1-0-24-329-0
1tb Samsung hard disk ~ £66

Biostar 790GX motherboard ~ £90
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=1013251
DVD rewriter ~ £20
Case ~£80
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?W...source=froogle
The build comes to around £681.
There are few 24" monitors here for around £150:
http://www.ebuyer.com/search?page=1&...12&subcat=2097
This should still give you a decent amount of cash for peripherals(around £70).
I would use Windows 7 RC1 for the immediate future and also make use of the free postage from Scan mentioned earlier.
If you have the dosh the HD4870X2 and 625w Enermax PSU will probably mean that probably all current games will run at high settings at the native resolution of a standard 24" monitor:
