    Shed's New Build

Hey all, after my exams are over I'm wanting to do a £500 build to celebrate/game on :

I was just wondering if you guys would spec me a system can be AMD or Intel, going to be used for almost entirely gaming at 1680x1050 such as Call of duty 4-6, Crysis etc. I'm not very knowledgeable on AMD motherboards or coolers so thats why I can't really spec my self a system as I'm not too sure where to start. I'm looking to OC the system to 4GHz, so perhaps a E7400 or Phenom II x3 710, but its upto you guys really

    Thx

    Re: Shed's New Build

    X3 720BE ~£115
    Asus 780G ~£60
    4GB PC6400 ~£35

P180 mini (great price amazing case) ~£55
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/140996
    Modu82+ 425W
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/144086

I use that psu with that case and it's brilliant but you would need a 4pin mobo power extender.

    640GB Caviar black ~£53
    LG Optical ~£15

    £100 for graphics. Maybe a HD4850.

    Re: Shed's New Build

Ouch, that'll be 1440 x 900 then probably. Need to knock £50 off that build to factor it in. I guess from the case and PSU but I wouldn't want to do that.

    Re: Shed's New Build

    Not too hard...

    The basics:
    Phenom II X3 710 - £99 - probably won't hit 4GHz on air but should get up to ~ 3.6
ASUS 760G mobo - £52 - has SB710 southbridge with ACC for extra overclocking juice
    4GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 CL4 - £38 (nuff sed!)
WD 640GB Green Power - £50 (plenty of other options at about this price though - look around!)
    DVD-RW - £15 (again, plenty of options, so I won't bother specifying a brand!)
Casecom shiny black mATX tower - £20 - yes,it's a budget case, but I've used it and it has a good layout and build quality; you're better off replacing the front fan for something that shifts more air though
From here on in it's a bit personal preferenceish, but I'd go for:
    Powercolor HD4770 - £83
    Antec Earthwatts 380 - £39
    Samsung SM2033SW 20" monitor - £120 - note: this is a special offer so you'd have to move fast: a 20" monitor with 1600 x 900 resolution.

Get all that from ebuyer with supersaver delivery and it'll set you back £496. If you went for the Antec P180 mini and Enermax modular PSU staffsMike suggests (which are both better, frankly) you'll still *just* squeak under £550. Personally I'd go with the P180 and the Earthwatts, but I'm an Antec fanboy

I'd also see how high you can clock the X3 710 on the stock cooler then purchase a "better" one later if you want to push it further. If you want I can add links for each item...?

It has the improved SB710 southbridge.

    4gb DDR2 ~ £37

    XFX HD4850 ~ £86

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/512MB...VI-XXX-EDITION

Comes with a dual slot cooler which vents hot air out of the case and a factory overclock.

Not if you include the free Scan postage!! Alternatively drop the aftermarket cooler and it will be under budget!!

Hardware Secrets reviewed it and said that it was a solid budget unit. It actually has a real rating of 430w though but it should be enough.

Good point!! However Moose are so dumb they would probably miss though..!

I think Moose are a prime example of why Intelligent Design(tm) is not true - there is nothing intelligent in the design or modus operandi of a Moose!!

One of my colleagues bought one of these recently (without consulting me, unfortunately) and it's going back already. Even run at its supposed native resolution (1366 x 768) it displays rescaling artifacts (vertical lines of blur at regular intervals across the screen). I've played with just about every setting available in the menu and cannot get rid of these. It looks exactly like the artifacting I got used to when the nice middle-aged ladies at a former employer of mine insisted on running their 15" TFTs at 800x600. Whether that means it's actually a 1440x900 panel that's been limited in the firmware or what I don't know, but I would swear that 1366x768 is *not* its native resolution.

Anyway, stay away from this one

    Re: Shed's New Build

I'd spend the extra on a nice PSU like the OCZ modxstream from overclockers. £45ish gets a 400W modular, more than enough

Thats a shame it was a budget option, so I suppose you have to be careful at the low end range.
