New Spinpoint Failing Long and Short DST
I have a new Samsung Spinpoint 1TB Drive which arrived last night. I installed it this morning and did a quick format (not full).
I thought it prudent to test the drive before filling it with stuff - so, I ran Sea Tools for Windows on the drive - S.M.A.R.T said test unavailable, Short DST failed, Long DST Failed.
Short Generic passed and Long Generic is still running.
So, do I have a dodgy drive? - Should those DST tests work, I think they should..
Re: New Spinpoint Failing Long and Short DST
It's possible the Samsung drive's firmware isn't fully compatible with Seagate's diagnostic utility, you should really use the right tool for the job: ESTool.
A potential gotcha is that the bootable ESTool ISO doesn't like certain makes and models of optical drive, and it also probably won't work if your optical drive is hooked up to a controller running in AHCI mode. If this applies to you, just create a DOS USB boot drive, copy ESTOOL.EXE from the ISO onto it, and take it from there. :)

Well, 5 hours later it seems to have passed all the tests on that Samsung utility.
Seems odd that it doesn't recognise the Seagate DST tests

Not really - it will be completely different firmware. Bit like using Ford's diagnostic test set on a Vauxhall engine management system.
