    Do rubber band melt?

Well, the PC I am building right now is looking rather.. wobbly. First the missing studs mean that the motherboard is only held by 3 screws. Now, I find that I do not have the ziptie I need to hold the 120mm fan to the Accelero S1. What do I do? Use rubber band. What's the likely hood that it'll melt?

i'd have thought it unlikely that it would melt, if your unsure about a band and you haven't got any zippee's then there is always reezer bag ties - you know the twisty bag ones.

Erm.... wouldn't it just be easier to get some more studs than risk it? They're only a few quid.... I'll even send you some through the post if you pm me your address...

    Re: Do rubber band melt?

I'd imagine the rubber band might smell a little with the heat but doubt it would melt..good luck.

it probably wouldnt melt but it would make a foul smell and if its a clear side pannel it probably wont look good.

I suppose it would be ok short term. They tend to go a bit weird when they're old (they're like people!)

Yeah, they tend to crack and snap. The closer to a heat source, the quicker they die.... and obviously a GPU heatsink is pretty hot. I wouldn't want one on for more than a few month. Fine as a temp measure though.

go buy some ties, they dont cost much. and check the local pc shop and scrounge some mounts.

you will wish you had when you short it out.

The longer rubber is exposed to a heat source, the harder and more brittle it becomes, it also rapidly loses it's elasticity with heat+pressure. It will snap and totally ruin your day in rather short order.

You are right. I was going to contact Antec about it. Main thing is, I simply couldn't postpone this build anymore (it's been over a year since I bought my first part) when I finally found a spare day. And I don't have any I can salvage. If you don't mind though, I'll send you my address. It might make it easier than explain why I am only notifying them now that there are parts missing. Over a year after I bought the case and my address do not even match my invoice anymore...

About the ties, there are a couple that came with my PSU for some reason. Not sure if the size is right, but I'll give it a shot.

    Thanks for the suggestions

    Re: Do rubber band melt?

Rubber bands can also soften and become sticky with heat as well as brittle and hard.
The outside becomes brittle and hard while the middle soft and sticky, however this will not happen overnight.

rubber bands are fine for short term but for long term use something else (unless you don't mind replaceing the rubberbands every month)
zip ties are best and as SuicidaL said normal bag ties work very well.
I use bag ties a lot, they are very good, thinner than zip ties so often eaiser to feed through small holes and best of all almost every thing you buy has at least one bag tie with it, so I've built up a large collection and they've never cost me an extra penny.

I would buy some motherboard stand offs if I was you, they are very cheap, look for a local maplin or try ebay
I say ebay because I know of a couple of online places where you can buy them but it's not worth £5+ postage&packageing on 50p worth of stand offs

    Re: Do rubber band melt?

rubber band is really not a good idea and at high temps they do melt. also it really depends on how good they were manufactured and how long they've been sitting in your drawers. normally they use a powder to keep it from dehydrating. meaning that the older rubber bands will snap very easily because they get so dry and loose their elasticity.

just pop in to your local whole in the wall pc shops i am sure they have some lying around failing that you can also get zip ties from b&q although pricey. look for the old twist ties from all sorts of packaging such as the cable ties from tv accesories, printer, monitors, etc. I am sure you have some lying around somewhere

    Re: Do rubber band melt?

It shouldn't melt, it might stick a lil to the surface it's on, or go brittle.

I used a rubber band to attach a small fan to my northbridge/heatsink. Was fine.

    Re: Do rubber band melt?

internal case temp nor are the heatsink fins hot enough for the rubber band to melt, however you will need to find heavy duty rubber bands, the regular normal ones will eventually decay and then break (over a period of a year)

buy some zip ties from Maplins
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=12034

I use the zip tie method with my S1 and 120mm fan, very easy and very secure.

    Re: Do rubber band melt?

Alright, fans are now zip-tied. Would you believe it's the first time I've used them. Silly question now: is the only (practical) way to remove a zip tie to cut them? It's what I've always done, but I am wondering if I am missing some obvious way to unfasten them.

Now I just need to get hold of some studs. If I go to Maplin and say 'Hi, do you have some studs', would they understand what I mean?
