you cut them unless they are the larger ones with a release clip.
why not wander into pc world and ask at the tech desk, chance is they will give you a few if you ask nice, tell em you brought a new mobo from them last week and it has 9 mounting holes when the one you took out had 6. should swing it :)

the studs you mean the little metal bits that fit onto the case and then your motherboard screws fit into those?
If so they are called motherboard stand offs

Ahh, thanks. Motherboard manual refers to them as 'studs'. I wouldn't know what to call them :)

I used rubber band to hold something (a piece of paper against the PCI-X fingers on my RAID card) before. Seems like they harden at high temperature then snap :S
