Anyone able to explain, or link me to a knowledgable site, why my CPU temperature is around 25 degrees lower than all my cores on a Q9450?
Real Temp reports the core temperatures at roughly 40 degrees each. This is on idle, with a perfectly seated Scythe Ninja II with Fan with a perfect layering of Arctic Silver. On load the temperatures on the cores go up by roughly 6-10 degrees and stay there no matter what game I play from WoW through to Crysis.

The 'CPU' value is a socket mounted diode, and doesn't represent the temperature of the actual CPU as a whole. Pay more attention to your core temperatures.

The core sensors are also more often wrong. I judge the main CPU temperature because I have never seen one fail.
Actually, core temps are normally quite reliable, when they aren't, it tends to lead to all kinds of problems since thermal/power management algorithms depends on accurate Tcores.
I guess it's all about checking the performance of the sensors to see what happens. Mine are fun - two of the cores idle at around 40 celsius, then the other two supposedly idle at 51 and 53 degrees. When you start stress testing, the first two cores rise to around 51 degrees, whilst the others don't change. Then once it reaches that, they all start rising in step together.
It's as if they don't want to go below them, but once above they work perfectly well. I just ignore those two, makes life easier.
Bios upgrade may help to get a better idea.
Usually they incorporate a Recalibration of some sort.
Use realtemp, and run prime 95 on 4 threads. Everest has problems getting temps and even recognising some hardware so it can be very unreliable. CPU temps are designed to be more accurate closer to TJmax, and can be up to +/- 10C off at 30C. Load the cpu with prime95 and put in a screenshot of realtemp after 10 minutes of running the test, that should give an accurate result.
you temps seem little high if they are idle recording. the main sensor u need to look at is the 4 cores #1,#2,#2,#4 . I use coretemp to monitor mine
