Building a PC from scratch takes years of training, no offence but you dont sound like your overly experenced with the construction of a computer.

It's often better from the point of view of the enthusiast (like us) and you can deffo get exectly what you want, but what it isn't, for the most part, is cheaper. Plus you get no warranty & guarantee with homebuilt that you get with shop bought.

    Re: I need help please!!!

I was going to make no assumptions lol

    Start here
    http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardware/

Come up with a budget and a list of things you want it to do.

We can suggest parts, or pre-built pc's or even people to build you a PC from scratch. We can also help you get to grips with the idea of building
but it has it's cons like breaking things during construction or you get to the point of turning it on and it doesn't work.

It isn't for people in a rush and isn't for people who expect it to work first time.

    Years?

It can be done in a day if taught by someone who knows their stuff.

Well you actually get a buttload more warranty in reality but it's on parts not the PC..

This means lengthy waits for new parts to arrive unless very carefully chosen (OCZ powersupplies are a good example of decent parts warranty).

    Re: I need help please!!!

'Years of training' is a bit extreme. After all, a lot of enthusiasts have no formal training...
I wouldn't advise building a PC unless you are knowledgeable about what to do. Apart from the physical assembly there's BIOS configuration, OS installation and any potential problems you may run into along the line. I'd say PC building is better for enthusiasts, buying one is best for someone who just wants a PC.

    Re: I need help please!!!

Just means that things like Memory (RAM) come with a lifetime warranty in most cases.

    Power supplies 3 - 5 years.
    CPU's - 3 Years or so.

So most things are safe purchases in that respect. It just means you have to fix it yourself.. no one will do it for you.

However this sounds like more hassle than it's going to be worth. Can we have a budget?

To get that warenty costs a lot because you have to use high end components! Compare that to the £50 you would normally pay for EVERY component on the PC!

Sammie, if you want to learn the very simplest ideas of computers (its not remotely complicated) then its worth doing. If not, its hassel. Lots of "off the shelf" PCs use one or two lessor components to let them get the headlines in (think having a Quad Core, when the rest of the PC is crap, and going to slow it down), however on a place like hexus, you can get good advice on choosing an off the shelf PC which isn't made like that!
