Did you read CustomPC issue 68? They had a massive CPU test, and whilst you may be able to get a quad-core CPU for almost the same price, phenoms don't OC far, and the Core 2 Duo's absolutely destroyed other CPUs in games. The E8400 was faster for Crysis than an i7 920 on the same graphics card, and AMD and Intel's other Quad offerings were way down the line. They now recommend it since it overclocks to insane levels and plays games brilliantly. Of course it was beaten in other tests such as video encoding, but for £130 4.4GHz is a pretty nice mark. Even if you don't OC, I still think it's great value for gamers.
