Re: Help on buying gaming computer

For £800-£1000 you're looking at a Core 2 system basically. If you want absolutely everything within that budget (monitor, peripherals etc.) you could probably get an E8400 (3GHz Core 2 Duo - great for games), a decent gfx card, perhaps a GTS 250, GTX 260 or to save even more money a 4770, and a decent 20-22" monitor. So yeah, not a bad budget.

Have you got a monitor, mouse, keyboard etc as not having these could add an extra £200 onto your budget or take £200 off from your tower.
Depending on which way you look at it.

Re: Help on buying gaming computer

What size monitor do you have? If you are building a gaming PC the necessary quality of the components will depend on what display resolution you intend to play games at. For a standalone rig £1000 is a pretty fair budget. You could get a quad-core system if you like, but generally Core 2 Duo is the way to go for gaming, especially when overclocked. i7 gives a bit of a boost, but not worth so much money, the graphics card will impact more. And that's why we need to know the screen size.

In your position then i'd be going for something like this...

But you may want to change the graphics card or swap to an Core 2 or AMD.

Like Emu76 said it may depend on your monitor and mainly the resolution of it.

Re: Help on buying gaming computer

    handscombmp nice work first
I didn't realise you could get an i7 build for that much, so great job.
A little note to the uninitiated is Vista 64-bit. Whilst 32-bit Vista won't support more than 3.25GB of RAM, it is far more compatible with any application made in the last 10 years than Vista 64-bit. Vista64 does perform better in some games, such as Crysis, as it can take advantage of the extra memory available. However, even some modern games such as Red Alert 3 do not work on a 64-bit OS, and older games have even more compatibility issues. As such it may not be a good idea to go to a 64-bit OS just yet. I know there are some who will disagree, but I think better compatibility with 32-bit apps needs to be available before people make the jump. Futureproofing is one possible reason, but most apps are still being developed with a 32-bit OS in mind, so it would be a while before we see the majority using 64-bit technology.

Re: Help on buying gaming computer

@Emu76 I'm the one who disagrees as i've got 64bit and haven't found any problems with it.
I'll admit that some old things may not work but ask how often your going to use these things if ever.
Plus if your using an i7 rig you may as well get 6gigs of ram and in that case you really do need 64bit.

@JBURNCILE When it comes to building the PC that aren't to hard now. Espically if you've already upgraded parts in the PC before hand.
Although from the sound of it you may be having someone help you it could benefit you to read through the Mobo manual as they've got how to put the parts into the pc.

Heres the manual for the Mobo I said

I would probably go for the a Samsung F1 1tb hard drive with 32mb cache as they are around £65.

Apart from that the build looks great for the money.

Regarding the Core2 quad and the AMD Phenom II X4 955 is competitive at stock speeds with the Q9550 in games:

Re: Help on buying gaming computer

    Like handscombmp says:
Think about what you are going to play. If you still play a lot of old games (I do ), then recognise that 64bit may be detrimental. On the other hand it will bring performance benefits to other things, and as he also says, it is well worth getting 6GB of RAM for a 64bit system, and you should have a great time with that+an i7 system. Remember that an i7 system works best on triple-channel memory which means you need to use 3 sockets of DDR3 RAM. As such you will end up with combinations like 3GB,6GB,9GB etc. if you were wondering why.

Re: Help on buying gaming computer

can I just point out that in handscombmp's list, it is only a DVD combo drirve, it doesnt write to DVD's only to CD's. so you would have to swap that for a different drive so add ~£8 to the total.

one of these should sort it

I have the previous model of the drive, only had 1 coaster out of ~100 written (failed to burn disc)
