P55 Boards

Was looking at some pics of the new P55 boards and they seem to have graphic outputs.
Now i always thought that the P series didn't but the G on'es did. So the G55 would have a video outputs.
Like we have now with P45 and G45.

Have they changed this now due to the new intel cpu's merging the gpu into them slightly.

That sounds vaguely familiar, but I'm not quite sure why it does. Certainly could be linked to Larrabee.


EDIT: Just checked - I've just found the articles I remember reading - turns out that they are related to Larrabee, but it's a bad idea to go for them because the chips won't come out for a quite a while later, and by that time the specifications might have changed and your graphical outputs on your P55 board will be competely useless.

So are Intel going to start phasing out Core 2 now?
How much faster do you all think i5 will be than Core 2, because right now in games the Core 2 Duo is still right up the back of the i7, and just barges ahed in some instances. I'm wondering if this means the i5 will be slower, and it's best to go for an E8400, or if it will be an even better trump card, and fantastic for gamers.

Looks like socket 1366 is going to be limited to higher end processors now.

The E8400 is poor value for money anyway. You can get triple and quad cores anyway for a similar price.

Did you read CustomPC issue 68? They had a massive CPU test, and whilst you may be able to get a quad-core CPU for almost the same price, phenoms don't OC far, and the Core 2 Duo's absolutely destroyed other CPUs in games. The E8400 was faster for Crysis than an i7 920 on the same graphics card, and AMD and Intel's other Quad offerings were way down the line. They now recommend it since it overclocks to insane levels and plays games brilliantly. Of course it was beaten in other tests such as video encoding, but for £130 4.4GHz is a pretty nice mark. Even if you don't OC, I still think it's great value for gamers.

Id rather get a quadcore than an e8400 dont get me wrong i love the chip and its reliable etc but id like a cpu thats great at multitasking and just extracting files quickly(encoding to). I bought the e8400 at £115 last year(feb) so it was an amazing chip and i didnt want to wait another year but if i could of i would of as i would of had a 4850x2 (same price as my 8800GTS 512mb) and crossfire phenom 2 940 for a similar if not cheaper build.

Don't trust everything that CustomPC says. Having looked at many reviews on the internet the X3 720 is actually very competitive with an E8400:

The E8400 is beaten in most of the game tests and the X3 720 is cheaper too. With more and more games using more than one core the X3 720 will have a longer lifespan for gaming.

Also the X3 720 can be overclocked to between 3.5ghz to 3.8ghz anyway and a few people have also unlocked their X3 processors to X4 ones(at least two on Hexus so far).

Anyway as you know overclocking is NOT a given too so basing performance on a potential upper end overclock is pointless especially if you need to expensive components to do it with.

Anyway regarding overclocking the overclocked performance of the X3 720 is quite impressive too:

At the time the review was done the E7500 and X3 720 were very close in price too.

Don't get one of those, please, they are such bad value for money.
If you really want a quad-core CPU that's fine. The new phenom's are worth checking out, and the Q9650 is pretty good too. The low-end Core2Quads don't OC that well, except the Q6600 so bear that in mind.

As for CAT-THE-FIFTH, what you say is very true, it is a very competitive processor around that area, but according to CustomPC anyway, it is slower and best really if you already have an AM2+ motherboard. The E8400 can OC to 3.6GHz with the stock cooler easily too, and I know 4.4GHz isn't a given, but you should be able to get at least 4GHz. Anyway we are getting , which is partially my fault.

that idea was if i was building like a month ago instead of over a year ago . The 4850x2 now is a bad price but 2 separate 4850's @£80 vapour x cooling is great value along with energy efficient .
