    Backup woes.. Blank Blu ray pricing?

    Currently I reckon it's about 50pence for 25gb of DVDs, £3.50 for 25gb of Bluray.
    Will blank BDs be halving in price any time soon, if ever?

    I can't see myself backing up a 1TB drive to 200-250 DVDs lol, too much work.

    I have a 1tb drive backed up to a 1tb drive, but when I want more storage I need a cheaper solution than buying 2x more 1tb drives, discs are also more secure of course.

    In the same boat as you to be honest, waiting until 50GB Blurays are affordable and then I'll probably back up everything I have onto them - until that point though, I'll be sticking with hard drives. It's much more of a pain, but there's no way I'm paying the prices currently quoted for a Bluray writer and the disks.

    I just realized, 2.0TB drives are already at $299.. will surely half in price soon enough, will need an optical solution badly .

    If you want a good value backup solution, ignore 2TB drives, 1TBs are the best value at the moment, with 1.5TB a little bit behind that.

    indeed.

    I only want to hold 2 HDDs (1 redundant backup) beyond that I have to use optical discs and 4gb DVDs are not big enough. also I don't like having my only backup of my main data as 1 single fragile hard disk.

    1tb = 200-250 dvds

    i'll be tolerating the lack of proper backup until bluray gets cheap enough...

    Use dual-layer DVDs? 10pack currently as cheap as 4.19 on ebuyer... not ideal in the longer term but it'd half your disk swapping now

    Or, what about using a single HD for irregular full backups and doing incrementals to Optical media?

    Its same price as DVD's:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/25pcs...-Printable-240 min - £21 for ~210GB storage, so to back up 1TB that's 5 packs, so £103.45 to backup everything, alternately 2*1TB drives at £51.82, one for data the other backup comes in at £103.64, and a lot less effot

    A NAS is worth considering. You call optical media more secure but it isn't without it's faults. For example, I found a CD I made a few years back (maybe about 5) and tried to play it. Beyond 30 seconds it was unplayable. I'll admit I didn't store it very well but if you insist on backing up to optical media, make sure you buy high quality and store it well. However, if you handle a HDD carefully and store it somewhere it won't get knocked about you will get much more storage taking up less space and you have the advantage of re-use so you can delete older backups. You could use DVD+-RWs but they're very expensive and usually very slow to burn.
