Hmm. This sucks. Thank Goodness I did not spend the £900 odd a couple of weeks ago and buy all the bits for a new i7 based rig.
Intel have really screwed up this time, hope more people in the industry show their annoyance by buying AMD based systems. I, for one, will be doing just that at work, and over the next 2 months, use our budget of £30k to buy AMD based PCs

Alternatively, if the i7 is clearly faster, then you might well miss the boat and would have to spend a hell of a lot more for comparable performance, or spend £700 or £800 for quite a bit less performance
Still, I fully expect i5 to be almost as good as i7 and overclock just as well, but only time will tell I guess.
The entry level Core i5 processors lack HT BTW.
Also there is another problem though - the cheapest Core i5 is going to be around $200 and it would be interesting if Intel are going to stick with the Core2 architecture for its cheaper processors.
It also means that people already on socket 1366 will only have expensive options if they want to upgrade their processor.
I would like to see how AMD will respond to this though.
Depending on how much you are spending the current Phenom II processors have great performance and since they are work computers overclocking will also not be a factor too. Also there are some fantastic budget motherboards under £60 from both ATI and Nvidia for socket AM2+ and AM3 processors which is another factor too!!Decisions are NOT only based on the CPU itself but the whole platform as a whole so at certain pricepoints an AMD based solution makes more sense and at others an Intel based one.
The poster indicated that he was annoyed at intel for screwing him on his home system so he was gonig to get them back by spending his employers money for their systems on AMD based systems.
His decision on what hardware to buy for work should be based purely on his employer's interests. Not him having a tantrum.

Looking at Scan now and the i7 920's have vanished and the 950 and 975 have appeared, cheapest one is the 940 now, guess that will go soon due to the very small differance in price to the 950.
Errrrmmmmm. I can still see them in stock.
