New PC build - PSU check

Hi all,

A friend is building the following:

i7 965
Asus P6T6 Revolution
Sapphire HD 4890 OC (4000MHz, 900MHz)
60GB OCZ SSD
2 x 1.5TB Seagate HDD
12GB Corsair DDR3 (1600)
Blu-Ray Writer
Tagan TG700-BZ PSU

Will this PSU be sufficient? And can anyone suggest a high-end aircooler to replace the stock cooler?

And yes, I tried to talk him into a slightly lower spec build (he'll be gaming on it primarily), but he wasn't having it!

What is the point of getting an HD4890 and an i7 965?? Your friend seems to a be tad clueless. I could understand if he was getting a Nvidia or ATI X2 card or a pair of cards in crossfire or SLI but for a single GPU an i7 965 will show no benefit.

The HD4870X2 is under £250 at Scan and will be a better match for such a setup:

Of course there is the cheaper i7 950:

The price difference alone should cover the cost of the X2 and the power supply.

Doesn't that totally depend on what the machine is being used for?

My machine is the heart of a recording studio and a i7 965 with the lowest spec single GPU card would do the job better than a i7 965 with nVidia/ATI X2 card.

We don't all play games or make our own HD porn you know.

High-end gaming thrives on having a fast graphics card and an i7 965 and an HD4890 is a very lopsided arrangement TBH especially when the HD4870X2 2gb is now under £250. I simply(and correctly) pointed out that an i7 950 and HD4870X2 would be better than an i7 965 and an HD4890 for gaming. However the friend of the OP has enough dosh to fit both an i7 965 and an HD4870X2 so this even better!!

Also you worked for OcUk and now Novatech so it would not be suprising if you got your bits cheaper anyway.I was pointing out it would make more sense to consider other alternatives which were better value for money(at full retail price).

I think that you are making my post into some blanket statement which blatantly it isn't. I made a comment based on the intended use of the computer not about high end Core i7 processors in general!!

Anyway I use relatively powerful workstations at my workplace for scientific image analysis and capture so I am quite aware that a powerful CPU can be more useful than a powerful graphics card!

Realised wrong Gibbo(Gibbo1701 is the one who worked for OcUk and Novatech it seems). He goes under the name Gibbo at the OcUK forums and Novatech.

I retract that part out and I apologise about that.Sorry to Gibbo1701 also for any offence unintentionally caused!

Anyway your childish statement about "We don't all play games or make our own HD porn you know" was plain annoying especially since it has nothing to do with the intended use of the computer the OP's friend is building.
