Heat Issue

Ok, this isn't your normal heat problem in that my PC temps are all running within normal spec. Basically whenever my PC is running it seriously heats up the room, near the PC can be anything up to 5 to 7 degrees hotter and with summer rapidly approaching this is proving to be a real issue.

Is there anything I can do to help get the temperatures down?

Basically youy have the same problem as cooling a PC case - just scaled up.

Your problem is getting rid of the wild heat from the room - so either generate less heat (lower power consumption PC) or improve the ventialtion in the room, either an open window or fit an extractor fan. A normal circulating fan won't help as it just circulates the air within the room, you need to get rid of the hot air, and bring in cooler air.

If the problem isn't solved by doing that, you will (as gibbo says) need to install aoir conditioning.

(You could try water cooling with the radiators mounted on the wall outside the room...)

Underclock, turn on all your power saving measures. Turn off the computer/sleep it when it's not in active use.

The reason your PC temps are all in normal spec is because it's taking all the heat out of the components and dumping them in the room You can either move it out of the room again, or reduce the production in the first place.

he he look at one off my underclocking threads, i got exactly the same room heating up issues as you

only my CPU is already 40C on idle when the room is freezing cold in the winter

Another thing you can do is duct the heat from the computer out of the window.

Get a flexible 120mm ducting and attach it to the rear of your computer at the exhaust fan.....attach another fan at the other end of the duct and string together a few fan extension cables to power it and hang this end out of an open window......and all the heat from inside your case gets sucked out of the window.

Could be wrong, but the person in question tried it. Maybe with some Deltas?

its great in winter, i have the rad off in here, now its window open and on hot days fan on window blowing air in.

lol i havent switched the radiator in my room on for about 2 years, the HD4870 heats up the room for you. now its summer 2 open windows dont quite do it


regarding fans, i wouldnt try it your self on your main pc straght away. try building a tube and fan first and blow it with out you comp....waffle waffle......use a hair drier on the other end may help

I'd guess it's less about moving air through pressure and more about insultating that hot air from the room - it'll naturally exchange heat with the cooler air outside so it's just a case of making sure the pipe is insulated well enough.

i did have a extractor fan in the old house, but it was more noise so i didnt get another for here.

I wonder if I can convince my wife that we need a portable air conditioning unit then Worst part is, this is the living room (some 20ft x 15ft), so for one little PC to generate this much heat after a couple of hours is fairly surprising (I blame the aluminium case myself)

Why would that make any difference to how much work the computer was doing?

Your CPU is going to generate a fixed amount of heat for the same voltage/workload no matter what cooler/case/house you live in. For the temperature of the CPU to remain constant (and unfried) that fixed amount of heat is transfered away and into the environment, so unless you want a computer that heats up over time and then crashes the amount of heat put into the room is identical no matter the case.

Open windows, Air conditioning, move house, etc. You can't really make a PC put out less heat without putting up its temperatures. The big problem you have to worry about here is thermal runaway. When a room rises by a certain amount, the temperature of the PC itself can actually rise substantially more. When I use my Quad Crossfire system back at my parents' house, it can raise the room temperature from 25ºC to as high as about 37ºC, this corresponds to a rise in CPU load temperature from about 55ºC to around 100-105ºC, clearly a bit on the hot side. To stop the PC shutting down I had to cut the clock speed of my overclock by about 100mhz.

Yes, BUT - the radiator part (that actually gets rid of the heat, has to be outside the room you are cooling. An Air con unit is like a fridge - the inside gets cold, the heat extracted appears outside (on the fins at the back, so it heats the room up. With aircon, the air in the is cooled and the heat extracted from the air has to be got rid of outside the room you are cooling. Th eportable 'aircon' units where the heat exchanger is built into the unit produces a stream of cold air that you are a person perceives as cold (and removes humidity) but won't actually lower the room temperature.
