FSB Problem

I've recently upgraded my PC (see my sig for system specs), but for some strange reason that I can't figure out, the system becomes unstable if the FSB is set at anything more that 140 ??

I checked the part number for the CPU and for the RAM, and both are rated to work at 333, so why does my system get unstable if I set the BIOS at anything above 140FSB ??

Are you sure you're using the correct voltage & multiplier, because if your FSB wasn't correctly detected by the board, who knows what else was detected incorrectly also.

I know the system FSB should be at 166, but when I had problems with stability I reduced the FSB step-by-step until it was running reliably, and now it seems that anything above 140 makes the system unstable again??

I'll try putting the FSB up to 166 tonight (and check the miultiplier at the same time) and report back what happens.

Any other suggestions will still be welcome!

I checked that the setting were as they should be (11.5 x 166 ??) and once the FSB was back to 166, the PC froze during boot up (before the BIOS screen), and there were also graphical glitches on the text screen that displays the detected hardware before the BIOS.

I can get the PC rock solid stable and running at lower settings (when the hardware setting displays as XP2000), but not very happy with that after I paid a little extra and bought an XP2600 chip ?!


Any other suggestions....anyone??

have you tried updating the mobos bios? you may find there is one that fixes instability.

maybe you got a tbred core? some xp2600s do have them, therefore they run a 133 bus

Check in the BIOS to see if can lock the AGP/PCI frequencies.

@ Trojan, I updated the BIOS a short while ago, but I'll do some checking to find out if there are any stability issues that can be solved that way.

@ Proplus, You read my mind, cos I was checking thru all the frequency settings last night

@ Swafeman, after checking my spec with a number of modding and overclocking sites, it DOES look as though it may be a tbred core (even though the part number on the box it arrived in stated a code for the Barton). So I'm gonna be finding out today if I can RMA it and exchange for a Barton..... As you can probably tell I'm new to system building and to Athlons so it's taken a while for me to realise the error.
