    Fancy upgrading something :p

I feel like it's a while since my PC has had a proper upgrade (this being my main, self-built machine) and it seems really unbalanced, so I'm just wondering what to do with at the moment.

I had a few problems a while back, leaving me with no PC for 8 months, and I was very tempted to throw the towel in, sell up and buy a pre-built machine from Scan to replace it. However, I'm fairly convinced that there's little benefit to a major upgrade right now, as my opinion is that DDR3 isn't much better than DDR2, X58 isn't much better than X48, and (for gaming) Core i7 isn't going to be much better than my Q9550. Certainly not considering how much it would cost, anyway.

So what do you think I should do with it? I've been thinking about SSDs, monitors and graphics cards over the past few months but haven't really made any decisions, so I thought I'd throw it out there and see what you all thought - and don't be put off by my earlier comments - if you honestly believe that Core i7, X58 and DDR3 will be a worthwhile move then be my guest

I'd be tempted just to go for an SSD and Win7.

The only weak parts I see there are the monitor and graphics card.... I use the term "weak" loosely cos lets face it, the 8800GTS is still a competent card!

... or as Shaithis says, all of the above depending upon your budget!

    Corsair Air 540, Asus Prime X570-Pro, Win 10 Pro, AMD R9 3900X, Corsair HX 750, EVGA 1080 Ti, 2x Corsair 2TB MP600, 2x 2TB WD20EZRX, 4x8GB Corsair Dominator, custom watercooled (single loop, 2 rads)
    Corsair 550D, Asus X470-Prime Pro, Win 10 Pro, AMD R7 2700, Corsair RM750i, Asus GTX780 Poseidon, 2x Sammy 500GB 970 EVO, 2x 2TB Seagate Barracuda, 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance, custom watercooled (single loop, 2 rads)
    Synology DS918+ w/ 2xWDC Green 3TB + 2x Seagate Barracuda 6TB, N2200 w/ 2xSammy 1.5TB
    backup:
    Corsair 500R, Gigabyte GA-Z97MX Gaming 5, Win 10 Pro, i5 4690, Corsair HX750i, Sapphire Fury X, 256GB Sammy SM951 M.2 (System), WD SE16 640GB, 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance, Corsair H100i

If that appeared under the Christmas tree, visualgasm wouldn't even begin to describe it

I think the 5850 looks a good bet at the moment (especially as both of the graphics card I've bought in the past have cost £200!) and still gives me the opportunity for crossfire later on... possibilities

7 is already on its way, I'm getting an HTPC so I needed an extra Windows license and at £45 how could I say no

SSD, monitor and graphics card are going to be the popular suggestions then it would appear - as I suspected. And yeah the 8800GTS still serves me well, though it was fairly juddery when I tried to play Far Cry 2 (until I realised that it was a rubbish game and my problems ceased), but I think 1920x1200 would probably push it over the edge.

As for budget, I don't know really. It's probably a case of WICJ, "Whatever I Can Justify" - to my girlfriend that is. I could probably rationalise 2 160GB Intel SSDs in RAID 0, 5850 Crossfire and a 24" H-IPS if you gave me a while.

    Re: Fancy upgrading something :p

I would probably look at upgrading the graphics card to an HD5850 or HD5870 and an H-IPS screen like the HP LP2475W.

IMHO,I would wait a bit until the price of SSDs has dropped a bit and a Samsung F3 1TB can be had for under £60 and is a very fast hard disk.

I agree with others here, monitor + graphics card

I don't have that SSD buzz yet, Yes I got a net book with ssd, but not for speed but portability+no moving parts = no hdd replacing.
Personally I think all computer users should be forced to use an old tape player for data loading once a month, that would teach some people patience.

Ahhh, I remember loading a snooker game onto my granddad's BBC micro with a tape, used to be a real "go and make a cup of tea" situation
