74Gb Raptor is too small....what next?

I was given moderation rights on a vBulletin forum a couple of years back and did that a few times accidentally before I got used to it, it was way too easy to click in the wrong place

As for the thread (on topic ), I don't think it's really worth bothering with Raptors, with new SSDs coming out and dropping in price you'd be much better off holding on to your cash and waiting until you can afford a suitable SSD.

SSDs aren't the be all and end all of fast storage, they suck hard at frequent writes. And the £/GB ratio make the raptor look cheap as chips.

Perhaps, but the reason I'd pick an SSD every time for a boot drive would be for the low access times.

The raptor is no slouch when it comes to access times either. It's a solid all-round disk.

Especially for loading the OS and apps, which we are guessing was the raptors job.

It's also a quantum leap in price. For the price of an Intel 64GB X25-E, you could buy 3 300GB velociraptors, stripe them, pummel the X25-E in real world (and synthetic) performance, get 14 times the storage capacity, be able to write as much data as you want without killing it, and save yourself £90 in the process.

And for £20 more then a 74GB Velociraptor you can buy a 64GB Samsung SSD that will obliterate the raptor and only have marginally less space.

SSDs have a place, regardless of whether you think they are worth their price tag or not.....the OP bought a raptor a while ago, that says a lot about how much he values speed over price IMO, therefore SSD should definately be a consideration....regardless of how much you want to pitch an extreme example to disuade him....

Have you actually used an SSD on your system to compare real-world performance?

I went from 4 x 1TB F1s in RAID5 on an Areca 1210 to 2 x Samsung 64GB SSDs on the ICHR10....and the difference in boot times and application load times in phenominal. I can open Photoshop CS3 *instantly* to give you an idea of the difference.....it took quite a while to load off of my RIAD5..and I have the RAID5 performance in my sig for reference.

My experiances are first hand. Personally i'm going to wait for the FusionIO consumer model for my personal desktop.

I had no issues with slow writes on the x25-e btw, and that was moderately heavy use. More heavy than a home user would ever get near.

I'm not trying to say SSDs are useless, I'm just pointing out that they're not the be all and end all of performance storage. I think my example proved that.

No still firmly in the software and systems architecture relm.

But i've used 15 of the X25-Es. FusionIO 160s (single, not duo), even some of the OCZ offerings.

I've also used a bunch of SAS 10k/15k drives.

All on the same project as it happened. Performance of them was very important. I had an X25-E pretty much as soon as i could get purchesing to find one. I'm not talking 3rd hand information here. Most of these devices had been in my dev server which sat under my desk (sorta UAT).

Yes. I recently used an SSD in a busy ldap server. A task for which they're ideally suited.

Again, I'm not saying that SSDs are rubbish performers and have no place. Merely that they're not the Jesus of storage.
