74Gb Raptor is too small....what next?

OK...I have an oldish 74GB raptor. It is getting too full for comfort. I realise its a few generations old now for Raptors. Is there a 7200 rpm drive from the current crop that will compete with it? I am not worried about synthetic benchmarks, just real life performance. I guess 320GB will do me.....any thoughts?

This. Raptors are still cream of the crop in real world SATA use. SSDs are an option too, if you don't mind the cost and space/write limitations.

Look into the Caviar Black if you are okay with the Raptor's noise. The Caviar Black is not quite as quiet as the alternatives (Blue and Samsung F1), but quieter than older Raptor and AFAIK is the fastest 7200RPM drive you can buy now. Edit: I can go with he Velociraptor suggestion if cost is not a concern.

Alot of the new 7200rpm drives will give similar transfer speeds to the original Raptors but, with a much better capacity.

The new Raptors are just far too expensive in my opinion.

Raptors are very good for RAID 0 setup or servers as they have a low latency, but for desktop go for Samsung 1TB or Hitachi 1TB, they have average read speed of about 95-105 MB/sec

Correction, average sequential read speed. Most disk I/O is random.

Random IO, go SSD.

Throughput (ie video editing etc) go for the highest density spindle drive you can get, so 2TB right now.

Yeah, SSDs are good too, but they are most optimal for frequent reads, occasional writes. Raptors are good all-round disks.

For throughput it would be cheaper and better performing to get two 1TB drives and RAID-0 them instead one 2TB drive,
You can actually buy 3 x 1TB drives for the price of 1 x 2TB drive.

However if your PC case can only accommodate 5 hard drives, and you want to download entire brain on it (according to scientists a human brain is 10TB) then 5 x 2TB drives are the way to go.

Depends on what your using it for and what your budget is....

But judging my the fact you bought a raptor and its just started to become full, I am guessing its a boot drive and your budget is fairly flexible........in which case I would look at the 128/256GB SSDs.

If that's not an option for you, then stick with one of the higher density 1TB hard drives.

Just a thought, why not buy a second Raptor 74GB and RAID-0 the 2 drives ? That way you can keep the performance and increase the capacity.

That was me.

And it's weird. I'll explain in a minute.

I'm working on a laptop at the mo', and using a trackpad. I clicked near the thread title and instead of getting the thread, I got a data entry field right on the main page. As I wasn't expecting it, and to be honest, didn't even know I could edit thread titles that way (without going through the Admin or Mod tools) I caught the f key trying to move out of the field. It then thoughtfully edited the thread title for me. It then took me about 30 seconds to find the old thread title and edited it back.

Meantime, ol' laser eyes and ninja typist there spotted it and posted.
