12 GB DDR3 kit worth it?

    Guys,

Am ordering new gear today. A little undecided about which RAM kit I'm going to use. Basically a toss up between:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/12GB-...-Heat-Spreader

    and:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/6GB-(...-CAS-8-DHX-EPP

    Which would you recommend?

My machine is used for gaming and some video/multimedia work....I game more than anything though.

    Cheers

I don't think you'll see much difference really to be quite honest between 6GB and 12GB. I would stick with the 6GB kit.

    Have a look through this : http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/memory...w-31549-4.html

Re: 12 GB DDR3 kit worth it?

Yeah, i'd probably go with Infinite's CAS7 stuff

You don't really need the maaahooosive heatsink that's on the dominator and it can interfere with some coolers...

Also, you might as well get 6GB, then when prices come down you can upgrade to 12GB if you feel that you need to, but 6GB is more than enough for most people

Cheers TAKTAK (this is 7DR Tater).

Does everyone generally agree that 12GB is OVERKILL?

    Aaah, 'ello

I would say that it is overkill, because it is *almost* double the price.. prices will fall, and you'll be able to whack some more in, and save money in the process

We're talking tri-channel, not dual channel here

Better to have 3*2GB DIMMs running in tri, than just 2 DIMMs

Re: 12 GB DDR3 kit worth it?

take a look at your current peak memory usage after a typical day`s usage. My bet is it`s less than 4GB unless you`ve done something very intensive. Go with 6GB, 12GB may be more of a requirement in 3-4 years methinks

Re: 12 GB DDR3 kit worth it?

*Most* games wont use more than 2GB, even some 64bit binaries, 3GB tends to be the top end of memory usage in games. So 6GB is plenty 'nuff. The same is true for non-pro audio/video tools. The biggest application for 12GB of RAM is running lots of virtual machines and large and busy network services.

Even 4GB is good, but since you have an i7 Mobo, just get 6 gigs. Screw dominator though, just get some normal Corsair.
