    HTPC just dies???

    hey guys,
Got around to installing my new 4550 yesterday for my htpc and set up the whole thing all over again today. I finally sat down to watch it a couple of hours ago and after about an hour of watching it the signal to the hdmi just turned off and the system wouldn't respond. I pressed the reset button and nothing happened and after a couple of tries I switched the machine off and turned it back on again it seemed fine. I checked through the event viewer in windows and there doesn't seem to be any error logs. I figuered it might just be one of those things but now after watching it for roughly another hour it has done the same thing again and it doesn't seem to be doing anything even if i turn it off and then on again. I've been using the htpc for about 6 months and this has never happened before. Anyone have any ideas...

It could be a PSU issue.

    Re: HTPC just dies???

I would suspect PSU - possibly shutting down on temperature and needs to be powered off to reset it.

    Re: HTPC just dies???

you reckon the psu is overheating... hmmm... I hope not, I'm guessing if it is it would be because of the extra heat being output by the passive 4550 I've just added because its been fine for over 6 months... Right now the temps on the cpu are 48C which is a tad high for a 4850e and the aux temp in speedfan which I'm guessing is the gpu is 56C... but as you would expect after leaving it on for about half an hour to monitor the temps and see if it is overheating it is now running fine... typical... I'll give it another hour and see

    Re: HTPC just dies???

I'd suggest you need software that can log your temps to hard drive while you're watching something - the chances are that the desktop isn't stressing the GPU as much as decoding would and your GPU temps will rise when you're watching films. That's probably what's triggering the overheat (if it is an overheating issue, that is )

    Re: HTPC just dies???

sorry I should've said I had left it on watching live tv and it never shut down... I also tried a blu ray played fine so I dunno what did it... anyways the main reason i replaced the onboard graphics with a 4550 was because of the lip sync issues at 24p and it turns out that it didn't help the issue so I've now removed it and am back to the onboard... looks like its going to have to be a new motherboard with an nvidia onboard gpu... sooo much money... *cries* ... anyway thats another issue so i'll open another thread about that later on... thanks for the help guys...
