    Lightbulb Power Supply Needed asap

    Hi

Having noticed the pungent smell of resistor burning in my super-quality Hiper 525W PSU I need a new psu as soon as possible.

Budget of £60 approx. and looking for 6 SATA* power and couple of PCI-E power cables. Just out of interest, why are some 6 and some 6+2?

Want quiet and efficient and will be running a dual or quad CPU (work in progress) with a few hard drives and one - possibly two 4830s.

    Thanks in advance

    Cheers.

Online tbh. Am looking at a Scan order to place for the 'today only' and get my other hardware at the same time (E6300/Q9550, mobo, hard drive and ram).

    Re: Power Supply Needed asap

After some searching I have come across an Antec Basiq Power 550W PSU but no reviews. I know the model below is noisy but not if this is.

Would be my choice for under £60. I would say the Corsair 450VX but its not in stock . Stay away from the Antec Basiq range, loud and rubbish

I suggest you revise 2 x HD4830 to 2 x HD4770, when you do some research you'll see it makes sence.

For £66 you can get an 80 plus certified Antec earthwatts 650w. I would definitely go for something like this over ther Basiq range.

    Re: Power Supply Needed asap

Thanks for the replies chaps. I don't want to drop below 500W tbh and considered the Antec Earthwatts but reports are that the fan is audible and would like to know how much given the machine will be in a quiet environment and don't want to disturb anyone.

Could stretch to £67 esp that it is 650W but don't get free delivery from ebuyer as not on the mainland. Prob have to go to oyyy.co.uk as will be getting antec 300 case from here and get free delivery that way. Trouble is most psus are out of stock.

Is it me, or did the psu prices soar since last summer? Don't know Watt is going on but won't let it Phase me

    Re: Power Supply Needed asap

I have come across two Corsair psus which look promising: Corsair VX450 £60 or the Corsair VX550 £70.

Is there any real benefit in the 550 as it seems the 450 can exceed its rating?

    Re: Power Supply Needed asap

Well the 550 has two PCIe power cables, the 450 doesn't. That's a pro for the 550, but the 450 is the Seasonic unit, the 550 is a CWT, which is fine, but not as good and not as quiet.
The quietest option of the corsairs is a Corsair HX 520W, but clearly that's more expensive still. The best option for quietness is a Nexus Value 430W, which has two PCIe connectors and literally makes no noise you can perceive beyond about 2 inches from the PC.
The only places that sell those that I know of though are KustomPCs and Specialtech.

I hear good things about the below. It is 500w, and below £60. I hear it is quite quiet but I cant comment on that having never had one. Plus its modular which is an added bonus

    hope this helps?

    Re: Power Supply Needed asap

The difficulty with OCZ PSUs is that a lot of them are nowhere near the rating on the box. When using crossfire you don't really want to find that the unit underperforms.
