Re: Intel versus AMD has anyone ever changed their loyalties?

i would love to go intel but when i was building my system the good hexus friends advised me this what i got now (check left) but for my next system im greatly to go intel or amd just problem is i dont get intel with their millions off different sockets and they Es Qs and other randon letters followed by more numbers

thats why my last 4 builds were all AMD since its easy to set up.... AM2 (or AM2+) ----> phenom --> job done, now they got am3, so its am3 ---> phenom

i have no idea about intel they keep it way to complecated

I have 4 intel and 3 AMD systems at home so I don't really care either way, what ever if fit for the job does me.

I have no loyalties. I'll but what's best for a given situation - period.

I think it's easy to get stuck in a rut with one manufacturer because it's so darn complicated working out the other manufacturers complimentary technology, motherboards etc. I think motherboards particularly can be very confusing. It will be really handy if there was an exact comparison of integrated graphics and other features for AMD and Intel motherboards.

I suppose it just comes down to individual preference. For myself I just feel obliged to support the underdog and the new AMD chips are very good. incidentally if anyone knows any good links explaining the new Intel motherboards and sockets that would be great.

What about yourself, do you have a preference AMD or Intel? can anyone hear you imagine what would happen if AMD went out of business? Intel could charge £1000 for their low end CPUs. And what could anyone of us do about it? If they ever get a total monopoly, maybe by buying out AMD in a hostile takeover, each one of us is going to be royally screwed, no ifs and buts no maybes.

Re: Intel versus AMD has anyone ever changed their loyalties?

Back in my student days it was AMD for the price difference, and because systems could be upgraded without a mobo change.
These days it tends to work out that I have to get a new mobo and new RAM when building a new rig on the "latest" CPU family so there is no loyalty from that respect - just what's available at the time.

I base my decisions more on reported stability & driver support than on pure performance or ability to overclock - from my experience over the last ~20 years with the 2 main competitors, I must admit a better experience with Intel from a stability point of view.
~ I have CDO. It's like OCD except the letters are in alphabetical order, as they should be. ~

My current system is AMD (X2), my last system was Intel (pIII), system before that was AMD (k6), and systems before that were Intel(486dx, 286at). I will always go for best total system performance for my budget.

can anyone hear you imagine what would happen if AMD went out of business? Intel could charge £1000 for their low end CPUs.
No they couldn't - there are enough alternatives to the PC that if Intel didn't keep prices competitive they'd lose market share to powerPC based things, or netbooks with Via chips, or phones etc. etc.
And what could anyone of us do about it? If they ever get a total monopoly, maybe by buying out AMD in a hostile takeover, each one of us is going to be royally screwed, no ifs and buts no maybes.
And can anyone imagine what would happen if chip makers only had to produce rubbish for it to sell? There would be no technological innovation or stability.

Thing is, Intel systems seem to be a lot more expensive. This is a big factor for me.

My laptop runs on intel - complete disaster! Can't handle more than Internet Explorer and a tune playing at the same time! Probably just the laptop though
