Just buy what suits you. I went from a Sempron 3000+ (2.0Ghz) to a E6550. My next processor will be one that fits my needs and what i can afford, wether it is AMD/Intel or VIA :|
When i was planning my system i was all set to go down the amd road, then the core 2 duo came out and chaned to intel.
I've switched back & forth several times as well, but like many others buy depending on my budget & needs. At present, I've both AMD & Intel PCs, each used for a specific purpose.
I'm a huge AMD fan, but I wouldn't buy AMD just for brand loyalty's sake - they have to make a competitive product too. So last time I built a computer for my own use it was a Core 2 Quad, because they were the best at the time at any price range.
At the same time, I also built a new network for my local church: 7 client machines running Semprons on a GeForce 6100-based mobo, and a server running Core 2 on 975X with ATi graphics. Last time I built a PC to order it was an Athlon 4850e because my friend was on a budget: the next one's going to be i7 because it's for video editing and budget isn't really an issue. Go for whatever suits your purpose best.
Now, personally, I'd buy a Phenom II X3 rather than an E8400, because what you sacrifice in single threaded performance you make up for in multithreaded performance. And it would make me happy to be buying AMD rather than Intel, but I'd be doing it for performance reasons, not because it's AMD.
Switched loads of times, whatever is the best priced and has the best performance gets my money.
I have always preferred Intel chips. But I am running an AMD X2 4800 at work though!
for work i have always used intels
but for media pc's / music pc's i have used AMD
budget = best price ie either
i too prefer AMD fan fixing atm
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
You go with the best bang for buck, or whatever is better at the time.
My first comp had a AMD 950Mhz, my second comp had an Intel P4 (even though AMD was better at the time I believe) but this was a dell system so my hands were tied.
And the current comp has a Intel Q9450.
My next comp is likely to be an i7 based comp. Can't see AMD bring anything out that competes with that.
I think it's good that AMD do so well with media Centre computers, because that should be an ever-growing market. I think the ever onwards greater CPU power larger number of cores will peter out. The planet can't sustain it for ever. Many of these big rigs use about 300 Watts.
Always went for best bang for buck at the time and budget. It just so happens that's been AMD every time I've done a build for myself. Most of the processors I've bought have been on some upgrade path or other anyway.
Have gone intel on my own laptop, netbook and when specifying for others.
Like most of the others have already said I buy whatever give the best performance for the amount of ££ i am willing to spend. No real brand loyalty here.
