Recommended Gaming/Audio Headphones???

Hi all,

I am moving out soon and am a bit worried i will fall out with my new neighbours when listening to loud music and gaming with my Logitech Z 5500

So am looking to get some good Gaming/Audio headphones that are around the £50 mark?

Any recommendations my fellow Gamers?

I have had my eye on Sennheiser HD 215 but have read they lack bass in games?

I got a Microsoft headset. The LX-3000 in fact. It cost me around £30 and it gives good bass and sound in general plus you get a mic as well. It's a great piece of kit, especially when you hear people around the corner and surprise them in CS:S. Just make sure you can cope with being called a hacker ;]

Music-wise, it's great as well. I would definitely recommend getting DFX Enhancer for you music player (whether that be WMP, Winamp, etc.) because the sound you will be used to changes dramatically. It gets my thumbs up :]

I would look at a pair of Beyerdynamic DT231 Galactic headphones:

They were 5 star rated by What Hifi? Sound and Vision for years.

They have very comfy pads IMHO.

And I would avoid them like the plague - I have a pair and really regret buying them.

They are comfy for short periods, definitely, but pads are too small for too long. Build quality is terrible with any head movements translating to squeeks and rubbing sounds amplified right into your ear, and the sound quality is pretty awful.

First review in that amazon link sums it up nicely, but he seems to give it a high score for the price.. I don't - they are worse than my £15 cheapo JVCs from Argos.

??? My pair never had that issue TBH and I was running them through my Hifi and a headphone amp and they sounded much better than anything for the price IMHO. I don't think that the build quality is any worse than any other headphones at the price unless more recent examples have had cost cutting measures implemented on them.The DT231 used to be around £40 to £45 a few years ago and my pair certainly was built well enough otherwise I would have returned them . Funnily enough I broke them(and a pair of SR80s) when I trod on it!! Open backed headphones like the Grado SR60 or SR80 are far better IMHO but the DT231 are closed backed. Funnily enough I had a pair of closed back JVCs too(they were around the £20 to £30 mark) and the DT231s blew them out of the water.

I think when driven really well they might improve - mine also sound a bit better out of a hifi, but from a computer they were awful, even going through the altec speakers acting as pre-amp.

While they're supposedly closed back, they don't have any of the closed back advantages - there's no sound isolation at all.

TBH, even open backed headphones are not that bad. Even my SR125s when on high volume leaks sound but not enough to bother anyone unless you are sitting right next to them. However I must admit after listening to some opened back headphones I find the sound of most closed back headphones not as "spacious" unless you are going for really expensive ones.

If the OP can go round to a few shops they can demo some of the headphones before purchase if they have an MP3 player.

Was thinking that, popped into town like into Curry's and they do not have any Demo's to try, HMV did but only had 2 to try. Mite try a bigger curry's store.

It's not me leaking that I'm worried about (and the DT231s are fine in that respect), it's the fact that you can't shut out any of the outside world. I actually like to listen to music quite quietly because otherwise your ears clamp down and you miss fine detail.. but it's not really possible with these. Come to think of it, the DT231s are just really not suited to me at all - but nothing I'd read in any reviews had suggested that might be the case.

It depends what environment you use the headphones in I suppose. It is pretty quiet at home so I suppose I do not need to push the volume too high.

At work it is noisier but it is not high pitched so again it is not so bad.
