Hi there everyone I'm looking to upgrade my old Shuttle SN26P with more RAM and a new CPU. Can anyone give me recommendations?

Socket 939 processors are very expensive ATM as they have not been made for ages. It may make more sense to sell your existing setup and get a new one.

You maybe able to get hold of a X2 4800 socket 939 processor secondhand but they are over £100 IIRC.

A decent shuttle pc (just the case, motherboard and PSU) which includes a PCI-E slot is at least £150 from what I've seen. I bought the SN26P for a stunning £100 from cash converters and it came bundled with:

    NVIDIA Geforce 7900GS
    2 x 512mb OCZ PC3200 DDR400 Platinum Edition
    AMD Athalon 64 3200+
    250gb HDD

It's a beautiful machine and I want to keep it.

    Eugh....tell me about it!
I've been spending the past couple of weeks monitoring prices around eBay and other websites for a reasonably priced:
    AMD X2 (4600+ or 4800+) OR AMD Opteron 170
PC3200 DDR400 RAM - Preferably OCZ Platinum, XTC or Gold.

I have a friend who is selling me his Geforce 7900GS for £20 and I plan on using SLI in this small machine.

*mutters* it's a shame that you require 100 posts minimum in order to buy/sell on Hexus

Re: Shuttle SN26P - Hardware upgrades

I am currently using a Shuttle SD37P2 as my main PC and a Shuttle SN41G2 as a server and TBH Shuttles are nice machines.

TBH instead of going for a second 7900GS a modern card like an HD4830 or HD4770 may make more sense.

I will also point you the way of the forums at Sudhian which have a large Shuttle community:

I would prob add more ram and wait until some one has some 939's or a higher spec AMD cpu to sell. Good buy, hope you enjoy it.

Thank you very much for the advice everyone, especially CAT-THE-FIFTH for the URL to the sudhian forums.

Hopefully I'll find myself a bargain CPU + RAM on eBay...

Should I really purchase a new GPU, is the 7900GS good enough?
Would two GPU's in the shuttle generate too much heat?

Two 7900GS cards will heat up the case too much. I would look to get a card with a dual slot cooler which expels air out of the case. I would also reverse the fans so that the graphics card fan will act to vent the hot air from the CPU out of the case. This is what I have done with my SD37P2. It helps improve air flow in the case IMHO.

Re: Shuttle SN26P - Hardware upgrades

Here's something I found on Overclockers, It retails for £60:
    Asus ATI Radeon HD 4670 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail
I'm not after an extremely powerful computer that runs the latest games but I'd like one with a long lifespan. The computer will also be used for video capturing + encoding.

The HD4670 is bus power so it should do the job and it is cheaper on Ebuyer too:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152940

The HD4770 is even a better bet although it needs additional power like the 7900GS does:

I would probably go for the HD4770 as it has reasonably low power consumption and has performance between that of an HD4830 and HD4850 too.

I would also check on the Sudhian forums to see if their are any issues with using either of these cards in the SN26P.

Re: Shuttle SN26P - Hardware upgrades

I've been trying to access the Sudhian forums but don't seem to have any luck in accessing them (maybe the website is temporarily down or likewise).

I'm still favouring the 4670 over the 4770 due to the native HDMI port and also overclockers are selling an 'Ultimate "Passive"' version:

    Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4670 Ultimate "Passive" 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail

    Info:
The new SAPPHIRE HD 4670 ULTIMATE Edition has been engineered by SAPPHIRE using heatpipe technology to bring a totally silent solution to this graphics family
Would this generate less heat in the Shuttle due to the heatpipes or am I wrong in thinking so?

Edit: I've seen a user's SN26P build with OCZ PC4000 RAM. Would you or anyone here confirm that it can be installed in a SN26P?

Re: Shuttle SN26P - Hardware upgrades

PC4000 ram will run on the SN26P with no problems you would have to manually increase the memory clock speed to 250MHz though.

Because, there is less airflow within SFF machines passive cooling isn't recommended, the SN26P has virtually no airflow around the video card area so any passive vga card will just get hotter and hotter.

The server we were using to host the website suddenly disappeared, we are currently trying to find a new server.....

An ive seen people use PC4000 OCZ ram in a shuttle with no issues or problems.

And finally with the SN26P it is better to use Active GPU's I believe as the airflow over the GPU's is not that effecient.
