    New i7 build.

Hi all. I am currently going about building myself an I7 rig and was wondering if I could have some help.

I must confess that I have jumped the gun a bit and have rashly purchased some stuff (could I have some feedback on the stuff I have purchased in case I need to shift it.

I am going to uni in september so cash is going to be short. My intention is to build this rig and to upgrade to nVidias GT 300 when it is released.

I will be gaming at 1920x1200.

    Stuff I have just brought:

    Intel i7 920 retail (£200)
Asus Rampage II Extreme retail (£185)
    Corsair HX 750w retail (£110)

    Stuff from last build

    3x1tb hitachi hard drives
    Saitek Eclipse III
    Microsoft HABU
    Dell 2407WFP A04
    X-Fi Titanium
    Logitech Z-5500

    Need some advice. Thanks

My first thought looking at your current system is.. Do you need it?

Second is.. Did you buy it over the net and a sub-thought.. DSR (send it back!)

Im sorta hoping for some sort of performance increase.

I managed to sell my current system for a fair bit of cash and hopefully this new build shouldnt cost me THAT much more.

The way I look at things, this pc is going to have to last me at least 1yr maybe 1.5/2yrs, hence why I feel its worth paying a little bit extra over my former system.

What ram would you recommend that I buy, and what graphics card and any modifications.

    Re: New i7 build.

I see. Well I honestly don't expect you will see much impovement since you had a nice system as it was, certainly not in gaming anyway.

Graphics wise.. anything around a GTX250 will play games at 1920 x 1080 nicely, Maybe go ATi with an HD4890.

Shouldn't make a great deal of difference on the RAM. Tri channel 3 or 6GB will do. Aim for low latency, or as low as you can.

    Maybe

Its a bugger chosing between the 4890 and the GTS 250. I want to go for the ATi, but I am also tempted to go for a 3D monitor at a later stage and I cant use ATi for that apparently.

Also the monitor for the 3D pack is 120hz. It could be just a quirk but I can see lines running down teh monitor. No one else can see them (im not insane), but the flicker is seriously annoying.

You can get an HD4870 512mb for under £100 and this will probably do until the new DX11 cards come out.

    Re: New i7 build.

    Fairly similar to my build

All you need is a fast system drive, 1600 or 1333 DDR3 and a fairly decent graphics card, 6 gig kits of DDR3 are fairly cheap.

I would go for the ATi cat-the fifth (thats fifth not filth) suggested.

Good luck with your build, hope you get what you want out of it.

    Re: New i7 build.

This is decent RAM if they get it back in stock:

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=8&subcat=1391

Or the 1866MHz cas9 kit is £8 more.... Plenty of decent kits around though for ~£80.

I assume one of those is a typo: there is no comparison between the 4890 and the GTS250, which is a rebadged 9800GTX+ with some power management improvements. If you're seriously planning to upgrade to a GTX300-series, then a HD4850 or 4870 would be the absolute maximum I'd go for - why pay more than £100 for a GPU you're only going to use for 6 months!?
