    Phenom II Overclocks

    Hi All,

Finally I built my first PC

Now, the overclocks on my Phenom II are quite poor (to what I was expecting). I'm using a Phenom II 720 BE, and a ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe motherboard.

The fastest overclock I can get stable is 3.2Ghz on 1.440V which is thought was terrible

Does anybody have any similar problems, or are there any settings I should change to help better my OC?

    Re: Phenom II Overclocks

leave everything auto- and just change the multiplier and see where u get before u start with other settings.

But you would need to list the complete setup for us to give you better help.

    Re: Phenom II Overclocks

Leaving everything on auto I get to 3.2 stableGHz and max OC is 3.2GHz stable.

    My full system spec:
AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE
    M3A79-T Deluxe
    2x2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800MHz
    320GB Samsung F1
    500W StealthXStream PSU
    DVD RW
    512mb 8400GS lol

The motherboard can take a 8-pin cpu power connector, but my power supply only has a 4-pin power connector, could this be a problem?

    Re: Phenom II Overclocks

Nope, 3.2 at everythign default is OK.

next, try setting Vcore in bios to around 1.375v and see where that takes you.
Also keep an eye on your temps, and report back with what that gets you.

    (again just multipliers for now)

    Re: Phenom II Overclocks

A few options. Could be the lack of power from the 4pin vs 8pin. Could be temperatures in your case (I notice you didn't list your case - is it just a generic one?). Could be that you end up pushing the RAM too high, although that shouldn't be the case if you're *just* changing the multi. Could be you've just got a bit of a bum chip! Overclocking mileage is never guaranteed, after all...

    Re: Phenom II Overclocks

I can't go any higher, I can only boot at 3.3GHz (but goes BSOD in Prime 95) and won't boot at all at 3.4GHz

Oh my case is a Coolermaster Elite 335 I think its the 4-pin not giving enough power tbh, I've also had to RMA the power supply cause its making high pitch noises and the fan is real loud aswell :\

    (changed my system now to my new system...like 3ghz P4 to a 2.8Ghz tri-core)

    Re: Phenom II Overclocks

Firth thing you need to do is crank the voltage upto 1.5V, this is perfectly fine for the 720Be. Play with the multiplier to 17. Leave the FSB at 2000.

This should give you 3.4 easy.. Now if this does not work add a tiny amount of voltage to the northbridge (only .5v max) Try this.. If still no luck make sure you HT settings are normal and northbridge FSB is normal.

    Re: Phenom II Overclocks

I've tried the voltage at 1.5, I think its more a power issue, as its totally fine on stock volts at 3.2 then just K.Os at 3.3

All the settings were at defult, which northbridge voltage should I increase?

    hypertransport

    or core/pcie voltage

    or cpu to NB voltage?

yup 090x, do you not think it could just be a power issue?

    Re: Phenom II Overclocks

It could be a power issue but also it could be a heat issue too!! Are you using the stock heatsink as this could be the reason?

    Re: Phenom II Overclocks

yes I am using a stock heat sink, why would the cpu power off during boot? I mean i doubt the CPU is being used 100%

it goes BSOD at 3.3GHz during prime 95 and the temps are the same as at 3.2GHz

The problem is that certain parts of the CPU will run hotter than other parts so even if the average temperature is lower some parts maybe running much hotter.

The first thing is to make sure that you have a PSU which has the 8 pin connector for your motherboard so it is getting the maximum power.

I would make sure that you run the cooler at maximum speed during any overclocking to see what limits you can reach too. It maybe that if you want to overclock higher you will need to invest in a better cooler. TBH even 3.2ghz puts you processor in the same range as the X4 955BE(but with one less core) and this should be plenty fast enough for the time being.

Yes i know, but I'll not be running at more than 3.2 probably for a while until I get a gpu upgrade (dual 4770s), however its just bugging my why won't think CPU overclock much, I think your right though. I'll wait till I get my 600W OCZ StealthXStream (with 8-pin connector) I'll be able to monitor temps at 3.3GHz and 50C+ should be no problem.

If your getting a new PSU, see if you can stretch a little more than 600watt
