CPU/GPU/MOBO Temperatures

Hi,

My new system has been running OK - CPU has been running at around 30C and the GPU at around 40C.

I haven't run it at load yet as I haven't got any software yet but a few minutes ago CPUID reported that my CPU temp had risen to 50C. I checked it out and it was usage was at 100% - I'm not sure why.

I closed all the programs I had open (web browsers, Skype, Media Player Classic etc,) and everything returned to normal.

I just wondered what temperatures CPU's and GPU's can run at safely and how much I can expect them to rise when I start using video/image editing software and playing games?

A was a little concerned because the temp rose by 20C in a few seconds..

Depends what CPU and GPU you are running, the X4 940 AMD processors are good upto 62c, the AM3 720 tri-core is good upto 72c and intels chips are normally good upto 80+c

Modern CPUs throttle according to usage based on their multiplier i think, AMD calls this cool & quiet intel calls it Speedstep, so if you own a 3ghz processor it might throttle down to 1.8ghz when not in high use to reduce temps.

Personally they look fine without even knowing what you have.

Yea, I should have said;

CPU - Intel Core2 Quad 8400 2.66Mhz
GPU - Sapphire Radeon ATI HD4850 512mb

4850 i'd imagine 100c before it cooks itself, wouldn't worry unless its hitting 90c or more.

Download OCCT or Orthos if you want to load the CPU and see what kind of temps you get. I'd use Realtemp to montor them personally.

mine is commenly at 100-105'C now, was about 85-95'C in the winter, but its warmer now. This will be fine.

Also for CPU, my Q6600 runs at up to 72'C on a hot day

It's not uncommon for temperatures to fluctuate like that (around 20 degrees or so) in relatively short spaces of time.

Obviously you've got to take into account the fact that it could easily be the result of dodgy sensors or dodgy reporting from the software you're using, but as said previously no particular reason to start getting worried based on what you've seen.
