    Re: I need help please!!!

Well (generally) your bf will get more for his money buying a pre-built PC.

However it's definitely a whole lot more fun building your own, which is why the majority of us are here.

IF you go down the homebuild route, the Hardware section here is probably the best place to start asking questions. It's an undertaking NOT to be taken lightly & an existing interest in PC's is a good basis for a homebuilder as speccing components won't be a complete mystery.

And in either case, have a budget in mind, and stick to it.

a CPU or Central Proccessing Unit.

    from:
    http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cen...rocessing_unit
A CPU (Central Processing Unit) is an important part of every computer. It truly is the brain of the computer, since almost everything in the computer must use the CPU in one way or another to get its job done. You can catch a visual glimpse of the BIOS working with the CPU when the computer is first switched on. If there's no graphical logo screen showing the brand of computer, you can see white text on a black background with what's usually referred to by most people as "gibberish". This "gibberish" is actually the BIOS checking the motherboard and the parts attached to it, to make sure all the necessary components are in place and working in order to hand the job of booting the computer from the BIOS to the operating system (such as Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and etc). This is called the POST (Power On Self Test). The only way to "watch" what a CPU is doing is to hook up an oscilloscope or other electrical monitoring equipment, since a CPU has no moving parts.

It could be built in that time. But realistically.. probably not.

Still don't know the budget, we can start making proper suggestions then.

    Re: I need help please!!!

Also remember that if you break something during installation (if you bend pins, damage something through ESD for example) you are generally stuck with the broken part. Scan's Scansure cover comes in handy there. Also there are a lot of aspects of computer building to be learned which you need to take note of - for example things like 'don't touch the gold contacts' might seem stupid but it is in fact important to follow. I'm sure forum members, myself included, would be happy to guide you but you should really read a guide on the net or watch a few videos for a basic idea on what to do - if you are still unsure of anything, feel free to ask.

Edit: sorry for changing the subject back to precautions - this thread is moving fast!

Yes they do & £600 could get you a serviceable PC if you shop clever. Having said that, if you do head to PC world, take someone who knows their stuff, because the staff there will BS you to death. Does the budget include Monitor, keyboard, mouse etc?

    Re: I need help please!!!

    Well for £600 or less..
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=1445&subcat=

Don't buy it but thats the sort of PC you could expect from a company that builds their own.

Quite a cheap one that will do the job quite well too

    Re: I need help please!!!

Well then shop around online with that budget in mind. When you have a few possibilities for your money, open a thread in Hardware & ask for opinions on the different PC's.
