What is Dual Layer, and is it worth it?

Dual layer as in........

only thinf I can think of is DVD's. Dual layer meaning you can store twice as much info on them but its not out yet.

Dual layer DVD's are commercially manufactured pressed DVD's otherwise known as DVD-9. This format has been used extensively for films since the beginning of the DVD format. Your DVD player refocuses the LASER onto the other layer of the DVD mid way through the film, which you might notice as a very slight pause in the film. DVD Writers only use single layer discs or DVD-5 due to the inability of the LASER to refocus mid-way through writing the DVD.

The new Blu-Ray technology will allow writing to dual layer discs with a capacity of around 50Gb. Sony hopes to have a 2nd generation dual layer blu-ray recorder on the market by the end of the year. (a 1st gen recorder is released in April).

probably around the same as every other top end entry into the market, so somewhere between £150-200 initially

Sure is, pricing is likely to be around £1500-£2000 for enthusiasts initially, with mass-market versions coming at £300-£400 in 18 months or so.

That will be the special blue laser ones that are ages away. The First to come are the 8.5 versions - just double what we already have.

am i right in thinking that it can only double dual layer on DVD+rs? i.e. dvd-r will soon be obsolete?

50GB is not DVD technology, it's Blu-Ray, something completely different. BD-ROM if you like! The first to come are 24GB discs and recorders which hit the market in April. As for DVD Recordable formats, I don't think the dual layer discs will have a great deal of impact on the market initially due to media pricing.

yeah, it's still hard to come by 8x media at the moment, let alone dual layer capable media.
