good 2.1 speakers?

Anyone able to recommend speakers that are good for music/games and the odd film?. I have 5.1 creative sbs 560 atm but i only use 3 speakers as there is no room and would like 2 which are more powerful instead. I think the budget would be ~£30(less is much better), possible?.

Yeh i may try that but need to find good ones to look for . Is output wattage worth taking into consideration? Or is it just marketing.

If you can manage, stretch to £40 for a set of Logitech Z4s.
Fantastic set IMO.

I have a set of z4's in my bedroom, never go over 50% volume (which is plenty loud)

depending on what you want to do with them, the z4's should suffice, also come with a nice volume control box which has an input and output, also has bass control, which when set to zero basically mutes the sub.

A friend of mine has a set of logitech x-140, decent speakers, pretty solid aswell, no bass unit but will suffice for a small bedroom. they can be had for £20.

also has a set of z-10's, they throw out some decent sound, nice bass, but not quite as clear as the z4's. the z10's come with an lcd screen, which can show current song playing, and also current cpu usage etc.
review: http://reviews.cnet.com/pc-speakers/...-32062002.html

For £40 for the z4's i dont think you can really go wrong, good logitech build quality, decent sound quality, very loud when needed, and low distortion at high volumes.
better sound range compared to similar priced creative sets, the creatives are generally 3 way,
(low, mid and high in the same speaker), which is nice as you dont have to have a sub, but as per the logitech z10's, sound can get a bit muffled/distorted at higher volumes (imo).

I'm sure I saw the Z4s for much cheaper in Currys somewhere... have a look around.

Re: good 2.1 speakers?

you can pickup a set of z4's online at currys.co.uk at bang on £40, not sure about instore though.

Altec Lansing VS4221 - similar to the 2421's, has a remote control which is very handy and awesome at the price, sound quality is good, bass is not so great but good enough at that price range. build quality is pretty good though. so guess the 2421 set should be of similar quality.

the 2421 set looks good, never had any personal experience with them though.
not to sure on creative 2.1 sets, the 5.1 sets are pretty decent, but i like logitech more, personal decision i guess.

**edit - just realised i had a 30 watt creative 2.1 set for 2 years!! in the cupboard now, the volume control got very very noisy, also when changing volume with it alot of the time one of the speakers would cut out, this was after about 10 months hardcore use though so your mileage may vary**

Re: good 2.1 speakers?

I want them but its still £40 which is kinda bit over budget for me at the moment, question is would either of the 2 i mentioned be similar/better than the z4?

Re: good 2.1 speakers?

if your sticking at £30 i would go for the altec 2421 set, a friend has the old 4121 set and its still going now, no noise on the volume control yet either, its going to be better than most cheap name brands at the same price range, just make sure you set the equalizer for movies and music,

watch out for postage costs as well.

Re: good 2.1 speakers?

btw the altec rates at 7watts per satellite, and 14 watts on the sub.
compared to your current system which is 12 watts sub, and 6 watt speakers..

i have the 2.1 version of your creative set as well , replaced with the z4 set.

tbh if ur spending <£30 on speakers there really won't be much difference between them. i would personally save up for a while to at least get the z4s. if u get speakers for £20 then they would probably sound worse than ur current ones. i have logitech x-230s and they sound crap, as does my friend's £20 set of creatives. i personally don't see the point of buying a new set unless they are going to sound much better than my current ones. its just not a good return for investment otherwise

tbh if ur spending <£30 on speakers there really won't be much difference between them. i would personally save up for a while to at least get the z4s. if u get speakers for £20 then they would probably sound worse than ur current ones. i have logitech x-230s and they sound crap, as does my friend's £20 set of creatives. i personally don't see the point of buying a new set unless they are going to sound much better than my current ones. its just not a good return for investment otherwise
in this price range i would stick with logitech z4 defo. hardly need to push it up to 25% volume, tried 100% volume when i first got them in and was pretty impressed, slight distortion at that level, but they aren't advertised as having zero distortion.

tried out the x-230's years ago and was not impressed.

the sub on the z4 is pretty solid, not too sure on the altecs though, only way to find out is go and test them.

Re: good 2.1 speakers?

the improvement over the 2.1 creative is

had the z4's for just under a year now, still going nice and solid, and im also using them for ableton live, fl studio and traktor pro, saving up for a set of professional monitors (adam a7's).

in the end its up to you and obviously your budget.
