Re: Where are the new shiny DX11 GPU cards?

My bad...sorry for rocking the boat as I genuinely thought that there was new cards coming out this month. It appears that I am a complete fool.

So basically there may be an expensive DX11 card out the same time as Win 7, i.e October?

I think it's fair to assume the top-end of DX11 cards will be £300 upwards - that's where the "ultimate" performance cards tend to price.

Of course, if ATI pull the same trick as they did with the 4000-series, they'll produce the upper-mid / lower-high end cards first, then X2 them later to make the "ultimate" performance cards. That would mean that a first-release ATI card would probably be available for < £200.

What NVidia will do is anyone's guess, considering how hard they found it to make decent lower and mid range cards from GT200. After all, there's still nothing from NVidia based on their latest technology below the GTX260 - if you want a current generation low/mid-range card you *have* to buy ATI...

It would only make sense that the very high end cards will cost £300+ but to say you cant buy a DX11 card for under £200 at release is naive.

After all, when DX10 was released we had cards under £100.

that was not until several months of release of the 8800. and the 8600 "mid-range" cards that were released were underpowered to say the least. point is: unless dx11 cards are coming next week there really isn't a great advantage in waiting if you need an upgrade now.

+1 to Zhaoman's point - I remember checking ebuyer weekly for months while the only DX10 cards available were the 8800GTX, then the 8800GTS, and none of them were less than £200ish (from memory).

A lot depends who gets to market first though - like I said, if ATI turn out a DX11 small-die mid-power GPU like they did with the 4000-series we will see sub £200 DX11 GPUs in the first release. If Nvidia release a monster GTX380 or some such, then the first batch are likely to be > £300.

Re: Where are the new shiny DX11 GPU cards?

To me it was a fair assumption, a majority of the new cards will be expensive when they come out, that was just a number i plucked out of the air. I remember alot of the nvidia series costing in the region of £300 when they first came out.

Maybe the price of the current range of cards will be reduced when the newer dx11 cards come out, i wouldnt say they will be drastically reduced to dirt cheap tesco value price. Besides there are some good deals on ATi cards at the moment, so you might as well take advantage if your current card is feeling the strain.
